place at the clerk's desk.
After a moment of silence Justice Mil
ler said: " Gentlemen of thV bar: I have
the pleasure to inform you that since the
last meeting of this court and adjourn
ment. Chief Justice Hon. Melville W.
Fuller has been appointed, confirmed by
H)C senate and received b"i3 commission.

Chief Justice Fuller arose and, holding a
bible in one hand, read from manuscript
the oath of office: M I, Melville W. Ful
ler, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I
wjll administer justice without respect to
persons and do equal right to poor and
to rich, and that I will faithfully and
impartially perform all the duties incum
bent on me aa chief justice of the United
States, according to the bcs of my ability
and understanding, agreeably to the con
stitution and laws of the United States,
so help me God."
The chief justice was then escorted be
hind the bar to his official seat in the
center. The court and assemblage arose.

is a popular youn man in this vicinity,
having been in the employ of Er. A. 15.
