I LIFE IN A HAREM INMATES AT THE MERCY OF DES. POTIC WOMAN. Mother of the Sultan Has Absolute Power of Life and Death Within Its Confines Cruel Punish ment Frequent. At the present moment, when so much attention is being paid to tho question of equal rights for men and women, a passing glimpse into tho harem of his serene majesty, Abdul A Hamld, exposes a condition of things hard to bellevo and still harder to accept. Curiously enough, however, It Is not tho sultan who is tho most pow erful and most dreaded autocrat in his own harem, but tho sultan's moth er, known by tho name of HValido." It Is the sultan's mother who not only regulates every Incident of tho harem, hut possesses tho right of llfo and death over the women In It, and 'there a 10 almost no known instances in which a sultan has dared to save a fa vorite from a punishment ordered by "the crown of veiled heads," as tho Valldo is called in the harem. And next to tho sultan's mother comes, not the sultan's favorite wife, as might bo imagined, but tho Has-nadar-osta, or grand mistress of finance. The sultan's chlof wife, or moro correctly speaking, mistress, ranks only third in tho order of tho harem, and seems to possess, more over, no real power whatsoever. I uso the word mistress, because tho sultan, which will probably como as a surprise to the majority of English readers, Is not allowed to marry. This extraordinary prohibition dates from tho time when a sultan, going upon some holy war, and taking his legiti mate wife with him, found her sud denly seized by tho enemy and led into captivity. Now, the sultan, be ing considered tho Almighty's de scendent and representative on earth, his wife was, of course, sacred, and could not becomo tho property of any lesser creature. Her seizure, therefore, created something like a panic in royal circles. A council was called, and It was decided that hence forward, to avoid repetitions of a sim ilar abomination, no sultan should evor marry. Tho members of the harem are still young slaves bought in Circassia, Georgia, Armenia and other places, and practically educated in the harem Itself on the chance that tho sultan may one day notice them. It appears also that civilization has not mado great strides in the management of tho royal harem, and that corporal punishments aro still frequent, eu nochs, called "beating eunochs," still being kept for refractory persons. Poi soned coffee is also not entirely out of fashion, while, grimmer still, tho ter rible sack flung into the Bosphoru3 oven now does its sinister work. It Is piteous to learn that, notwithstand ing all this, many parents willingly, sell their children to supply the enor mous colony which constitutes tho harem. But life for a Turkish potentate Is at best a troubled circumstance. Tho fear of assassination is so great 'that tho sultan, it seems, has not for years slept two nights running in tho same chamber. The only person awaro each night of the room selected is his mother, who secretly gets it ready. Two female slaves also He, like faith ful dogs, extended across tho door way, ready to spring up at the slight est noise or the faintest call from tho sovereign. But for fear of treachery even these aro chained every night, and never until tho last moment know to what part of the palace they are to bo sent. The ordinary amusements of the harem are trivial enough, but It is pleasant to 'learn that some of tho women have tho deeper joy of motherhood, and that there are chil dren to take care of and watch over. Not on the Job. An eminent lawyer with a large practice before the supremo court of tho United States enjoys telling of a tremendous jolt to his youthful vanity In the early days when ho mado a spe cialty of criminal cases. Ho had been retained by a man charged with larceny In Pennsylvania, and as tho ovidonco was conclusive had advised his client to plead guilty. "You havo a bad record, you know," said the lawyc, "and you havo prac tically confessed your guilt. I should' say that you will be sentenced to about three years." This last completely dmnfounded tho accused. He looked about his cell vacantly for soveral minutes before turning to his attornoy. When ho did It was to say: "Will you kindly step out and got sne a good lawyer?" Success. One Drawback. "One o' do drawbacks of dlshoro life," said Uncle Ebon, "Is do fact dat do call of duty don' very often sound near as loud as do dinner boll." Washington Star. A WOMAN'S SUFFERINGS. A Dreadful Operation Seemed to Be the Only Outcome. An old gentleman, rather portly and clad in a somewhat youthful suit of light gray flannel, sat on a bench In tho park enjoying tho day, relates tho Woman's Home Companion. "What's tho matter, sonny?" ho asked a small urchin who lay on the grass just across tho walk and stared intently. "Why don't you go and play?" "Don't wanter," the boy replied. "But it Is not natural," the old gen tleman insisted, "for a boy to bo so quiet. Why don't you run about?" "Oh, I'm just waitln'," tho little fel low answered. "I'm just awaitin till you get up. A man painted that bench about fifteen minutes ago." Another Variety. Tho farmer met his son at tho sta tion. "Back from college, eh, boy?" ho drawled. "Yes, dad," replied tho youth, as ho lit another cigarette, "and I tell you I am glad to get back. Been digging up Greek roots all tho season." The old farmer went over to tho hardwaro store and bought a grubbing hoe. "All right, my boy," ho announced as he handed over the hoe, "yeou can change yeour exercise during tho sum mer by digging up dogwood and sassa fras roots." Newspaper 500 Years Old. "Any preparation of wheat or oats put into water that is below the boil ing point and cooked as mush Is usu ally served, remains a pasty, Indi gestible mass. Tho cells are tough and unopened. In addition, the stom ach of a person sensitively constituted refuses to do anything with the pasty mass. It is sent into the second stom ach, tho Duodenum, where in conse quence of tho long time of the first process of digestion, is fermented and soured. As an eminent medical man pertinently states, the stomachs of half tho people going about the streets are about In tho condition of an old vin egar barrel. "Intestinal dyspepsia is tho direct consequence of such feeding." Knowledge of those facts and a wide experience In tho preparation and use of cereals brought out the product known as Grape-Nuts, manufactured with special reference to having tho nitrogenous and starchy parts of tho grains, of which tho food is composed, perfectly nnd scientifically cooked at tho factory, ready for immediate uso a.nl theroforo not subject to tho ma nipulations of any cook, good or bad. Tho starch of tho grains, changed to grape-sugar, can bo seen glistening on tho little granuhs, and gives forth a delicate sweetish tasto, very palatable. Children and adults obtain fine re sults from tho use of Grape-Nuts food. It Is so perfectly adapted to tho wants of tho human body and so easily di gested that many cases aro on record of nursing babes being fed very suc cessfully on It. "There's a Reason." Instead of tho accustomed quiet which provalls at tho burial of tho dead, great excitement and fear at tended tho burial tho other day of Michael Soreno, a prominent merchant of Westport, whon by tho collapsing of a grave tho coffin nnd several per sons attending tho services woro hurled Into a small pit. Tho final prayer had been said by tho preacher, and tho assistant to tho undertaker stopped to tho foot of tho coflln to arrange tho rope for letting tho coflln into tho grave. At that mo ment ono of tho pallbearers acci dentally kicked out tho crosspioco that supported tho coflln. Tho coflln quickly descended into tho grave, tho body going feet first. Tho asslstnnt hastened Its descent by tumbling, on it. Several persons rushed to tho edgo of tho grave, causing tho soli to yield, and in a few seconds flvo per sons wero lying in tho pit half covored with dirt. They woro pulled out, tho coflln was dug out and laid flat, and after tho grave had been redug tho burial was completed. N. Y. Press. TWO SISTERS HAD ECZEMA. "I'm waiting for that other chap to get ahead of mo," whispered the Pitts burg millionaire. "And who Is he?" "Why, a grafter from San Francisco. By the side of him I will seem as in nocent as a lamb," Laundry work at home would be much more satisfactory If tho right Starch were used. In order to get tho desired stiffness, it is usually neces sary to uso so much starch that tho beauty and fineness of the fabric Is hidden behind a paste of varying thickness, which not only destroys tho appearance, but also affects tho wear ing quality of tho goods. This trou blo can bo entirely overcdmo by using Defiance Starch, as it can bo applied much more thinly because of its great er strength than other makes. Strange Bequests. In his will Stephen Swain of tho parish of St. Olave, Southwark, Eng land, gave to John Abbot and Mary, his wife, sixpence each, "to buy for each of them a halter, for fear the sheriffs should not be provided." John Aylett Stow loft the sum of five guineas for tho purchase of tho picture of a viper biting tho hand of his rescuer, to be presented to an emi nent K. C. as a reminder of "his in gratitude and insolence." With a smooth Iron and Defiance Starch, you can launder your shirt waist just as well at homo as tho steam laundry can; it will havo the proper stiffness and finish, there will be less wear and tear of tho goods, and It will be a positive pleasuro to uso a Starch that does not stick to the iron.
