.steamer Leonii was burned and sunk
at her wharf in the li.ist river last
night. The. cargo, consisting of to
bacco and cotton, was valued at S'J.riO,

Leona, which sailed from Galveston
September U7, caught lire at sea several
days ago, since which time she has pro
ceeded at full speed, with battened
liatclms, for this port. At :::!() yester
day afternoon the Leona came racing
up the East river to her pier, where
baste was made to debark the pas
sengers and open the hatches. An
hour later an army of men was fight
ing the name;! in the Steamer's hole.
At six o'clock about 70 firemen, with
the- chief anil deputy chief, were on the
boat, working to keep the lire front
spreading toward the stern. It was
found to be beyond the efforts of the
firemen and an order was given to open
the fore and aft port bole In order to
allow tho water to make her settle.

outcome of a two-days' meeting the
Western Federation of C'luiutiiiuiuiis
was organized here, with F. M. bliuvv,
of lluulder, Col., as iresident, and A.
II. Limerick, of Winfleld, Kan., as
secretary. Seventeen Chautauqua as
semblies, located in Missouri, Iowa,
Kansas, .Nebraska, and Colorado, were
represented at the meeting. The
organization is for the purpose of
closer co-operation on thu part of the
Chautauqua assemblies, especially in
the matter of securing lecturers for the
schslonti. It is planned to engage lec
turers for the entire circuit of I hau
tituquus, thus materially reducing tho
cost to each. For the present the head
quarters of the federation will be at
Winfleld, Kan.
