FOURTH OF JULY MEETING.
We are requested to call a meeting
of those interested in tho celebration
of the Fourth of July, said meeting to
bo held at Tub Advertibkr office at
7:80 p. m. on Tuesday, Juno 10th.
Evorybodv interested is requested to
be present.
Rev. James Hiatt will preach at
Hillsdale Saturday night, at 11 o'clock
Sunday, and again Sunday night.
C A. Smiley, of Asplnwall precinct,
and Mr. Siminons.of Salem, gave these
headquarters a social call Saturday.
Dr. J. L. Meivin ha3 opened an of
fice in the parlors of the Park hotel
first door to the loft, at the head of the
stairway.
Mr. and Mrs. Win. II. Hoover came
down from Lincoln Wednesday, to ats
tend the funeral of their nephew, Ar
thur Hoover.
Thoa. B. Skeen drove in from An
burn Tuesday, and visited friends for
a few hours. Wo are glad to learn ho
Is fast recovering from tho sovoro in
juries ho received two or three weeks
ago.
Miss Dorrain came in from Auburn
last Saturday, to visit her brother,
John Dorram. The next day alio was
taken sick with the mumps, and has
been kept busy since then nursing that
pleasant ailment.
The Woodmen of tho World had a
meeting at tho opera house Wednesday
night, to confer degrees. Members of
the Howe, Stella and Auburn camps
were preaent in force, and a great big
time was enjoyed.
Mrs. John Watson and Mrs. S. A.
Scnvill returned homo Monday evening
from Topeka, Kansas, where they had
been visiting for two or throe weeks.
Mrs. Watson's sister, Mru. Morris.came
home v ith her, and we understand will
make her home hero.
Ihk Advertiser mansion was vis
ited by some serenaders Friday night
of last week The excellent music was
greatly enjoyed.
A.O. Chambers writes us from
Bridal Veil, Oregon, to send him The
Advertiser, as ho wants to see what
is going on in Nemaha.
A basket dinner was held in Charley
Robert s grove.adjolning the Champion
school house, last Sunday, by the
Champion Suuday school.
Attention is called to tho "Pictorial
History of the St, Louis Cyclone of
May 27th," to be found on one of the
inside pages of this paper.
Mrs. Edith Schell, who has been
visiting with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
John Clark, last week, returned to her
home in Beatrice last Saturday.
John Strain went to Omaha Wednes
day, to attend tho meeting of the
Maaonic grand lodge, he being a rep
resentative from tho Nemaha lodge.
Miss Nina Moore went to Tecumseh
Saturday. Miss Nina gave such good
satisfaction as teacher of tho school
near Cook that sho has boon engaged
for anothor year.
Georgie Burgess, tho second son of
George Burgess, had the misfortuno to
fall and break both bones of ono arm
between the elbow and wrist last Fri
day evening. Dr. Meivin set tho bro
ken bones, and the boy is getting along
as well as could be expected.
We have been informed that last
week we failed to mention one of tho
best features of the memorial service
at the opera house May 30th and that
was the part taken by tho children.
We plead guilty, as Hie children all did
splendidly and wero deserving of
speciul pralso.
Reva. Denton and Goodwin will bos
gin a meeting in Missouri July 2nd, in
tho grove a mile and a half northeast
of the St. Deroln ferry landing. Evu
orybody is Invited.
Oscar Scovill returned homo Friday
evening of last week, after a stay of
several weeks in Kansas. He has con
cluded that Nemaha is as good a place
to live as any of them
Mr. and Mrs. Parmeter. of Lincoln,
visited J. W. Webber and family last
week. They returned homo Saturdaj.
We acknowledge a pleasant call from
thorn, and also Jrs. Webber.

The members of the MX,. Pleasant
church will give an ico cream supper
Friday evening, June 10th, at tho resi
dence of Mr. Lute Barnes, ono and
one-half miles northwest of Nemaha

CHILDREN'S DAY.
Next Sunday will be Children's Day
at the Methodist church in Nemaha,
and the children will have possession
that day. 'ihore will bo no preaching
In the evening, tho regular children's
day service taking the place. This
service is called "The Young Crusads
ers," consists of choruses, recitations,
etc. The program is as good as was
over given hero. Everybody is invited
to attend.

(Kansas) Sun. arrived in Nemaha Fri
day morning, on a visit to W. W
Sanders. Ho came most of the way,
on his wheel, and developed an appe
tile of corresponding alarming proportions.

Dr. and Mrs. W. W. Keeling started
for Springfield, South Dakota, Monday
night, driving over to Auburn and
taking the Missouri Pacific. Stove
Cooper took them to Auburn and on
the road got into a mud puddlo and
stuck, and all partiea had to get out
and wade through mud and water
two or three feet deep, and wait until
Steve got tho outfit out of the mud
hole. Tho doctor will visit his two
sons and a daughter for two or three
weeks.

ARTHUR HOOVER DEAD.
Arthur J. Hoover, oldest son of
Johnson P. and Iluldah Hoover, died
at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning, J una
10th, 1800. Aithut had not been feel
ing woll for sovcral days from stom
ach and bowel complaint, but would
not glvo up. Sunday he waa down In
town for tho last timo. After going
homo ho was taken worso and suffered
Beverly. Dr. Meivin, who had been
attending him, was sent for, and res
Moved him somewhat. After sevoio
Buffering on Monday he grow easier
toward morning on Tuesday and
strong hopes of his speedy recovery
wero entertained but as tho day ad
vanced vomiting, which had troubled
him from the first, became incessant
and ail the symptoms grow rapidly
worse. About 0 o'clock tho doctor was
agaiu called and succeeded in checking
tho vomiting in about an hour. From
this timo on till midnight, ho grew
gradually easier and the worst was
thought to be over, but about 2 o'clock
he again began to grow worse, with
symptoms Involving tho nervo centers
He grew gradually worse until about
5 o'clock when tho collapse camo and
Arthur passed quietly away.
Arthur was so strong and full of
life that his doath is a shock to all
He had a wide circle of friends, and
all feel keenly his Iobs. He will bo
greatly missed as he always took a
leading part in everything with which
he was connected.
To tho parents his doath is a terrible
blow. Tho sympathy of everyone goes
out to them in this hour of trial and
affliction."
Arthur J. Hoover was born in
Nemaha in "February, 1877. Ho Imp
passed all of his life here, and looked
forward with joyful anticipation to a
long life, but the Father knows best,
and we can only bow in humble sub
mission to His will. May He comfort
the loved ones in their nilliction.
The funeral services wero held at
the M. E. church Thursday nt 1 3Q p
in. Rev. C. II. Gilmore preached the
funeral sermon. Tho pall bearer
wore associates of the deceased Alborl
and Frank Titus. Robert Frost jr
Irvin Hadlock, Leslie Woodward, and
Lionel Swope. Tho church was
orowdod, and at least ono .third of
thoso coming could not get inside
The remains wero followed to tho last
testing place in the Nemaha coraotrj
by a largo procession
We learn that John L. Colhapp, n
a former citizen of Brownville, died at
His homo in Chicago, May 20th, 1800
Mr. Colhapp died from a tumor of tin
stomach, from which he ban been it
great sufferer for several months. Mr
Colhapp was at ono timo one of tin
proprietors of The Advertiser, the
llrm being composed of Jar is S.
Church, now living In Auburn, John
L. Colhapp, and T. C. Hacker who
lives at Red Cloud, under the firm
nnme of Church, Colhapp & Hacker
Afterward Mr. Colhapp engaged in the
manufacture of cigars and tobacco. He
removed to Chicaco many years ago.
lie will bo remembered by all tho older
citizens as lie was known by almost
every ono in tho county when living
at Brownville.

Friday of last week was the last day
of school at tho Maple Grove school,
two and one half miles northwest of
Nemaha, and a picnic was given as a
treat to tho children for their faithful
attendance. A number of our citizens
attended, and nil ruport a good time.
Unfortunately for us, but perhaps for
tunately for the picnicora, wo did not
hear of the picnic until It was ovor.
Wo believe this was a deep laid plan of
Jim Drain, Billy Maxwell and Herb
Minick, who wero afraid thoy would
not get onough to oat if a hungry editor
was present. Miss Lulu Clark was tho
teacher of this school during tho past
year, aud gaye excellent satisfaction.
