One Year by Carrier in advanco $1.60 Entored at North Platte, Nobraskn, Post offlco as Second Class Matter. FRIDAY, MAY 10. 1911. AHHOHBCcmenl. I hereby announce myself a enndidate for County Clerk BUbjcct to tho decision of tho Republican voters at tho pri mary election to bo held Tuesday, August 15, 1911, nnd respectfully solicit your support. C. William Yost. The Trade Witk Canada. The Springfield, (Mans.) Republican, widely kndwn as nn independent paper, generally moat progressiva in its views, comments Intorestingly upon the nrgu ment between President Taf t and the grangers relative to the Canadian rec iprocity treaty nnd points to some figures which throw light on tho trad ing this country docs, in agricultural products, with the northern neighbor. Tho entire question scarcely hinges on thin particular trading; yot the com ment and figures throw some light on a contention as to which public opinion Btilllremalns quite divided. Tho Repub lican says: , "President Taf t'a talk to the pro testing granger delegation of Cana dian reciprocity Monday was full of good sonso nnd courageous, enlightened statesmanship, Hois convinced- that the farmers are unwarrantably alarmed ovor tho consequences of reciprocity to them; but in any event he belioves that this policy will bo of great bencllt to tho county as a whole, and thuro lies his duty as chief executive and that duty will be followed regardless of con sequenced in tho way of votes. How refreshing the contrast of this position with' that of the politicians of both parties In congress who re going through all Bort9 of gymnastics to keep or gain the favor of tho farming votel "Tho president not only Bhnws cour age in this mutter. He shows also a better knowledge of the situation than do the protesting grangers. They say that If reciprocity goes through "wo must take less for our wheat and Icbs for our products, and that moans a halt in the improvement of our homes and in the education of our children." But the president says: If we take down that (tarilT) wall, we will benefit by it, for we shall sell more ' agricultural pro ducts to Canada than it will soli to us. Wo do now and we shall sell it even more after tho treaty goes into effect. That is my judgment." And ho is right in sayina: that we alroady sell more ag ricultural products to Canada than Can adadoos to us. Mr. Simcklofordof Mo. a member of the Iioubo ways and moans committee, has prepared n statement of; fact lit relation to this matter. It gives tho sale of leading agricultural producta between Canada and the United States for tho five years ending JunoSOInBt: , Horses: ' Wo sold In Canada $14,172,475 Canada sold to uy .' 2,519,211 -r - -- s Difference In owrjfavor, . .$11,G28,2G1 Cattle: rr , , jWe sold In Canada 1,578,170 Canada, Bold to us 1,193,70(5 . -Differeneo In our fayor. .884,5183 Meat and dairy products: . Their position is tibpurd." Ah Epochal Decision, The supreme court decision order Ing tho dissolution of the Standard Oil will be epochal, although tho outcome of tho case has probably been largely discounted so far an its effect on bus! rm3 and industry ia concerned, becnuBO It wna foreshadowed by previous docis ions of the supremo court, nnd a dif ferent order would have been mirprls ink'. tit .. 1 it it ine uociHion is cpocnai, riot uccnuso of any new principlo nnnouncod, but rather becauHO it furnishes proof thnt in thin country no aggregation of wealth is so powerful as te be per manently above the law. That th greatest buslpess organization tho world has ever known can, and will,- bo mad to keop , within the (imitations which the law-maktrt have Bet for ono and nil mUMt tend to reutore confidence in the integrity of our courts And the Jtnparialtty of our judges unawed by the Influence or wealth of th Individ (law ur InUucU jnvulved. ' drily Mil ptflHi Ht m WriM U JfKNIy to arouse criticism, and that is the so-1 called hook thrown out as noavlne clause I to bie business In the Intimation that I only "unreasonable" motratnt of trade is unlawful. If the court proctcds upon this definition it will make un necessary the amendment to the Sher man law, which has been demanded to limit me ouense ru unreaaonauie re- .. ir ... II trnint, and at the same time will make tho judges in each case the, final arbi trators ns to what is or is not "un reasonable." This would seem to be an invitatien to constant litigation to try out tho temper of tho court and lave much to tho changing personality of its membership. The Standard Oil, itself, might dissolve and reorganize, and go up again to the supreme court to ascertain whether in its new form it would bo adjudged a combination in "unreasonable" restraint of trade. If thla view is correct, then iUwill still bo necessary to enact laws that will draw more sharply the Una between lawful nnd unluwful industrial combi nations so that tho hazards of business lay bo reduced as much ns possible Omaha Bee. , Five-Day Armistice. A general five-day" armistice between tho Mexican revolutionists and the fed eral government was agreed upon at 6 o'clock Wednesday to take effect im mediately throughout Mexico, it wna signed by Judge Cnrnbajal, the ederal penco envoy, and Dr. Vnsquez Gomez, Jose Pino Suarez and Francisco Madero, sr., tho members of tho rebel commis sion. ; This is tho first cencral armistice that has been agreed upon since the rev olutlon becan last November, nnd is expected to call h halt upon the vigor ouh warfare in central and southern Moxmo. It furthermore la believed thnt within five days a peace ngrec mcnt will have been effected which will restore tho country to tranquility. Experiment Station Bulletin. No. 120. Tho Nebraskn Experiment Station as just issued Bulletin No. 120, en titled, "Alfalfa Management." This gives a summary of tho methods used by the most successful farmers in varl ous parts ot tno stale In securing a tand and in handling a crop of alfalfa. The discussion relates to tho eastern 03 wall as to the western sections. It has been tho purpose in writing this bulletin to put tho material in such a form that tho farmer can readily find a discussion of the phano in which ho is particularly interested. Tho first divi slon treats of the kind of soil bent adopted to the growth of tho plant, with suggestions for treating aoil which does not givo satisfactory results. This is followed by n discussion of the seed bed. Tho mothod of jts preparation and tho importanco of manure reccivo a prominent place. Tho farmers are ndvlsqd to purchofo their seed front the north or from tho dry lands of tho northwest, rather thnn from 'the south. IJt Is ulao rccommen ded that no seed bo used which has not boen tcateil for purity and for ger tnination by the government seed lab ratory locatod at Lincoln. This will bo mado free. A discussion of tho amount of seed por aero and of tho -various methods of Heeding will help tho man who is in doubt in reference to this point. Broad easting is compared with drilling, both with a disk drill nnd a press drill. Warnings arc given to farmers who uno either mothod, and suggestions for greater oucccsb. There is n comparison mado of spring seeding, early summer needing, lato summer seeding, and fall seeding, from which conclusions aro drawn. The lute summer seeding is recommended for sections of tho state whero there ia plenty of moisture to givo the plants n gaod.startm that season of tho yoar. Tho important subject of disking tho nl fal fa is jdiscusBed qulto thoroly. The conclusions uro based upon roporta which havo boon received from a largo number of farmers who have practiced disking their fields to increase the yield. Tho results do not scorn to wnrraut the praclico unless the field ia to he plowed ur in n year or two after it Ib disked. Directibna ato given for thickening tho atnnd on Holds whero thoro are not n Hulllciontnnmber of plants. Itis stated thnt tuts can bo uuccesstully done in many instances, uccommonuatlona nro mndu to alfulfa seed nrowera. nnd tho bulletin closes with a brief discussion of methods of caring for the huy and of pasturing tno auuiiu noiu.
