Ono Year by Mall In advance $1.25 One Year by Carrier in advance $1.60 Entored at North Platto, Nebraska, Post ofllco as Second Class Matter. TUESDAY. APRIL 2.3, 1011. ihe legislature passed a law rcquir ' lng every owner of on automobile to pay into the county treasurer two dol lars und every, owner of a motorcyclo ono dollar. These sums go Into the county road fund. Tho law becomes effective July 7th. ' During the next five years New York City will expend $40,000,000 In enlarg ing and improving its school aysUm, $1,000,000 of which will bo expended tHls year. At tho present time 90,000 pupils in that city are In school but hull tlmo on account of lack of scats It Is well to note thnt in 1U throes of commercialism Now York takes a breathing spell occasionally to look nfter its schools. Tho ntwspapors of thlsscnatonnl nnd representative district hnvo good words to say of tho work of Senator Hoaglnnd and Representative Husheu In the last legislature. They all agree that tho elfortiof our two legislators wore well directed and that tho moasurca Intro duced by them nnd which have become laws of tho state will prove beneficial. Particularly succesful was Senator Hoaglnnd in getting enacted into law mcasurs introduced by him. Tho dream of an inter-state wagon road down tho Republican valloy is about to be realized. Tho movement has spread to Holdruge, Mindon, Hast ing, Fairmont, thonco to Lincoln and Omaha. Surroys havo been made within tho past wook, and photographs taken of tho proposed highway from tho east part ef tho state to Oxford, tho above mentioned placos co-opero-iag in the workt an tho survey has to bo made both ways from given point". ' Photoaraphs aro taken to bo used in connection wltk other data in pam phlets to bo printed for free 'dis trlbutlon, which will bo dono with! in the next thirty days, Tho Tri bune haa been attempting to get our ptople interested In a similar roHd through the Platte valley , but tho , Interest shown haa been so email as not to be noticeable. Before businoju can be better It 'must bo worse? Last week's commarclnl V.and stock markat roports nre a repe tition of tho old story, Hope Is dc ferrcd. The expected impetus to busi ness holds back. Things go alohg nt a monotonous level, not very bad, but yet not vory good. John Moody, a rec ognized finunclal authority, insists that a permanent revival cannot be ex pected because no real liquidation has yet occurred.vThe contrary is generally ' assumed, but Mr. Maody points out that tho signs of a debt paying era, banking and commercial failures fol lowed by an Incroaso of bank surpluses have not yot appeared. Wo cannot have the dawn till tho darkest hour has como and gone. Ingldntly, this HlYects us little in - thin part of tho west, It Is the stock doalora and the industrial centers that fool tho de pression. If Nebraska had kept Its - money out of distant land and in local securities it would bo Impregnable.- Statu Journal. Big Steel Car Order Placed. 1 An order has been placed by the Pittsburg and Lake Erie railroad for 2,000 all-steel cars, representing a cost of $2,000,000. The cars will be of the gondola and coko variety nnd in their construction there will be required ap proximately 24,000 tons of steol plates and shapes, besides 10,000 car wheels and 2,000 sets of air brakes. It is the largest order placed for new railroad this season. Sixty Cars of Carpet. A train of sixty cars, containing 1G, 000 rolls of carpet, loftChlcago enroute from New York to San Francisco last week nnd passed through hero Friday. Thoro aro 600 miles of' carpdt In tho shipment enough carpet to lay a width the entire length of thn line of the Northwestern from Chicago to Omaha. It is said to be the largest solid train- load of freight ever consigned across the continent. Tho value of the consign, merit is placed nt almost $1,000,000. Thousand Dollars for Rose. One thonsand dollars for a rose. That Is tho proposition of tho Panama-California exposition directors, who want a new species of this popular flower, to bo known as the "San Diego," and which will be used in profusion on tho grounds of the exposition in 1915. Tho offer will bo extended to every florist in the United States through the San Diego Floral association, . which will have charge of and be tho final judge In thu contest. There are but three general restric tions, The first is that tho roso must bo hardy, so that it can be easily grown outdoors. Tho second is that the com. pctitora must bn residents of tho Unltod Statca and tho third Is that they must mak known their Intention to corppete to the San Diego Floral association. Is it the Union Pacific. , A recent dlspntch to the State Jour nal from Callaway Bayo: ' For sevoral montho a private pro motor hna been working among the farmers and ranchmen In western Custer andi Lonn counties for the building of a 'railroad into thoir terri tory. Tho citizens along the line have subscribed a large sum for tho building of the rond. During thO past two weoks a number of Union Pacific representa tives havo been in Calluwuy. A special car bearing several of tho high officials of Union Pacific arrived Tuesday evening. It Is thought hero that tho Kearney and Black Hills branch will bo extended from this point, and that work will bo gin within a short tlmo. This branch was built In 1800, nnd while Callnwuy hha slnco been its terminus it haa main tained a grade for several milos up the South Loup valley to tho northwest of Callaway, which grade will bo used should tho extension be made. It is thought that it will bo , excended to tho Block Hills country to the, northwest and that it will connect with tho proposed exten sion from Bellot, Kag., to Kearney, FAIR EXCHANGE.
