TUESDAY, JANUARY 10. 1011 Several re-apportlonmont bills lmvo been drawn and will bo introduced in the legislature. So far nil that have been given publicity put Lincoln county in a representative district by itself, with a iloat member from Lincoln, Dawson and Keith counties. Such a division is equitable and will provo satisfactory to the people of this county. It io hoped that an apportionment bill giving western Nebraska the proper representation will megt with Httlo op position from the east end members. In his message to tho legislature, de livered last Thursday, Governor Aldrich urges the passage of direct- legislation ana county option; tho restoration of tho closed, primary; strengthening of tho anti-treat law; giving cities tho f lower to make thoir own charters; rat fkation of tho income tax amendment; favoring tho use of voting machines, overhauling of tho registration law to prevent cortitknto fronds, llbernlnppro priatlons. He wantB the legislature to eschew party politics, pais necdod laws andiadjourn by March 1st. The Tribune favors any move that will attract more peoplo to tho atato. If it lo necessary to spend $50, 000 of tho taxpayers, money to further thnt end it will bo money well spent. Ne braska, and especially the wuRterri half, needs more people, either as farmors or stock growers, It is a sec tion that oilers Inducements to both. The gain mado in population during tho past ten yoara was largely in the western counties, but tho increase was not nearly as large hb it Would have been had the statu been mora exten sively advortised. The flold Is Inviting. The judiciary committee of tho United States senate is expected to make a favorable report on the resolu tion for an amendment to tho consti tution providing for tho elo:tlon of senators by a dlroct vote of tho people. It In believed that the resolution will bo strenouflly opposed; that filibustering will bo waged to prevent It from com ing to a voto. The senators who op pose the resolution uro pretty certain to kill themsolves politically, for un doubtly throo-fourths of tho voters tho country over favor electing senators by a direct voto. It in In tlio line of progressive politics. Indications are thut the county option bill will como up for consideration early in tho legislative aoosion, and that ft will bu fought through to a flnlBh with out unnecessary delay. Wo beliovo that this is the proper plan, for so long an it hangs Are and especially us the fight promises tb bo bitter it will ma terially hindor tho passugo of other laws that are needed. If county option Is defeated and tho result at this time Is problematical tho noxtmovo will bo for statnwldo prohibition. Such action will tako tho question out of politics, whoro in thcflrst place it had no busi ness. In n suit brought by a stockholder of tho Swnrzchild & Sulz berger company it is charged that this packing concorn mado n profit of from 60 to 60 per cent on its former capital of $4,373,400. Wo doIIovo that Mr. Springer re tires from ofTlco after having well per formed his duties. A recent bulletin of tho census bu reau states that twenty-eight million ot tho population of tho United Statos Is centorcu in cities having populations of twenty thousand and over. This Is nearly one-third, nnd tho proportion is so largo as to bo startling. This move ment from tho rural sections and vil logos to tho cities has been developing for a century and wo may hope thnt it hs now reached a climax ana that the movement will herooftor bo turning in the other direction. This is possible for tho reason that agricultural, stock raising and fruit-growing aro becoming moro attractive each year and aro af fording bettor opportunities even to young mon who havo been bred in the cities and largo towns. Coupled wlth-a froe, independent and henlth-givlng ex istence, making for both manhood and morality, tho country must be greatly tho gainor all through and through if tho movement back to tho land can bo S:lvon tho proper Impetus, Kearnoy lub.
