Roosevelt Non-Committal While Colonel Roosevelt on his visit to Washington refused to have anything to say on political matters, his going thoro has served to stir up all manner of gossip about the presidency, with ref erence not only to the question of wheth er, ho may bo nominated In 1912, but also with reference to President Taft and to the various presidential aspirants. Colonel Roosevelt came to Washington and went his way without disclosing what he means to do with respect to 1912. Ho did lot It bo known whether ho would bo for Presldont Taft's re nomlnation or whether ho would bo for ono of the western progressives, like Cummins or LaFollette, or whether he would stand quietly by and await any thing In the way of a boost in the di rection of tho whito houso that might come his way. Still, tho colonel's taciturnity on pol itics docs not prevent his friends and his 'enemies from talking. Both are busy doing It. From this talk It appears quite unlikely that he will be the nom ineo In 1912. His enemies in tho repub lican party say ho out of it becauso tho democratic victories in various states show tho colonel Is losing his grip. His friends think this utterly absurd. They think the colonel still has a moro powerful hold on tho masses than any othor man in tho United States. But even among tho friends of Roosevelt alk can be heard that porhaps It Is just as well under tho circumstances not to try to forco his nomination; to let things take thoir courso and let somo othor man bo nominated. Compliments North Platte. It has been my pleasure to vist North Platte many times during several months past and although my duties have been on tho strenulous order, I always hail with increasing delight tho chanco or op portunity which bids mo to come to "the- Platte." Boyhood frionds, tho recollection of the halcyon days of tho frontier and tho glamor of romanco, all havo their charms, but In this day and ago of commercial strife, and city prido, the generation In chargo of affairs now caro very little of these things, save as they can uso them for advertising purposes; but with all thin there seems to be an united effort to mako this the best city west of Omaha in Nebraska, I believe they nro succeeding In this; ono only has to takoa stroll for a short time and noto tho now buildings boing erected and the old ones, put Into mod ern conditions, and then dip Into tho commercial lifo of tho merchants, just a little bit, and ho will bo convinced that prosporlty Is not an idle word when applied to men and conditions hore. Why should not ho who has once lived here desire to come back; linger for a whilo and thonaay, North Platto Isand always has been good enough for mol Seecm P. Neimio. Looks Blue for County Option. ' Representative Leidigh, of Otoe county, in an Interview in the World- Herald states that thoro are soveral members pledged to county option who, howovcr, insist that tho county shall really bo tho unit, "They aro nt" ho delares, ''In favor of tho doublo ender proposition submitted by tho anti-saloon league undor which a county will be dry If It goes dry and may bo dry if it goes wet," Which is a now way of putting it, Tho material point, however, in tho above is that if thoro aro a num ber of such mernbors, tho majority of tho houso mernbors elect already boing against county option, it is difficult to see how a county option bill can over get to tho governor and tho forces for prohibition will havo to submit to a fair and square state-wide vote on the question, by means of tho initiative and reforondum. Grand Island Inde pendent. Thoro has been no overpowering de mand to learn tho extent of tho voto of tho socialists in Nebraska, but Clyde J, Wright, the candldato for govomor, is satisfied thatwhen the tublo is mado up It will show that he received not far from 0,000 votes. And oven .then it will not be possible to say just what the strength of tho party in tho Btnte really Is. It is probably true that u consider able number of democrats, unablo to vote for Dahlman and unwilling to sup port Aldrlch, deliberately throw their votcB away on tho only other candldato pn tho list. It is porhaps true, also, that a few socialists became alarmed over tho Dahlman danger and voted for Aldrlch. These would bo a very fow, for a man Isn't u real socialist unless ho is willing to seo almost anything happen In politics, In thfj hope that good may como out of it later, Any way it can be figured, therefore, Nebraska has bo- twen five and six thousand members of tho socialist party State Journal. Siaclgir-BrklaiwJ. Tho wedding of Miss Olivia Kathor Ine Burkland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Burklund, and Ira A. Seemingly everybody within driv Ing distance of Somerset was in attendance at the Farmers' Institute last Wednes day. The women were all there to hear the addresses and to see the cooking demonstration by Miss Maxwell, tho noted farmers' institute lecturer irom Wisconsin; all tho youngsters to see the fun; the bachelors throughout the hills to enjoy n square meal at a picnic dinner; and other farmers to show livo stock and farm products. There were enough peoplo to fill tho hall threo times. We do not know all the exhibits but among tho best were thoso unexcelled Horefords and somo excellent Poland Chinas owned by John McConnell. The display of mules was excellent. Thoro wero also somo good draft colts, but not so good as tho mules. Tho exhibit of com was seldom excel led In point of excellence nt a Farmers' Institute. In fact a few of the exhibits would bo likely to win a place in ahow. Potatoes, beets, turnips, and other garden products were competing with butter, bread, cake and other liko things that appealed very strongly to the North Platte delegation. There were educational contests for the boys and girls with suitable prizes for the winners. From every point of view the institute was a live one, such as is held only in comuntnities of tho most wide awake, up-to-dnto people. Not Sorry for Blunder.
