IRONGL-ADJASTE. Itst Rule Among the Hindus Abso lute and Unchangeable. THE POWER OF THE BRAHMAN All the Wealth of the World Would Not Enable a Lower Ca'ite Hindu to Wed Into Hit Family or Touch Hit HandTyrainlenl Social Dlvliloni. Cnsto distinction In India l n tltlntf dlfOcult for n foreigner to coinprehonil. All tlio rnclnl or religious distinctions which scpnrato European nations from cncli other and dlvldo them within theinnclves do not equal the number of classes Into which tlio Hindus arc di vided by what Is known as "casto." Tho 200.000,000 Hindus nro made up of diverse rnclnl elements nnd speak about nineteen developed languages nnd over 100 dlnlccts. Tlioy nro ngnln divided Into over 3,000 castes, most of them with subenstcs. Ono of these castes, the Itrnhmnna, Is split up Into tnoro tbnu 800 subenstcs, of which none will Intermarry nnd few will cat to gether. Tho term "casto" Includes bo many things that It Is difficult to define It. There are. however, two properties es sential to a truo caste first, there Is nn entry except by birth; second, ninr rlnge outsldo tho caste Is absolutely forbidden. To presorvo tho purity nnd maintain tho cxcluslvcncss of tho so ciety mnny minute rules of conduct, many restrictions on food nnd many ccromonlal observances nro Imposed on tho members nnd enforced by pennltles which cannot be ovnded, against which there Is no nppcal nnd which In ex treme cftRos follow tho offondor beyond tho grave. Dut that Is not nil. Tho relations of castes to each other aro as much n matter of religious observauco ns tlio rules for their Internal regulation. The nrnhmnus nro tho highest admittedly nn'd undoubtedly superior to nil tjje rest. After them como those who nro acknowledged to bo twlco born. The Icsh honored follow In a graduated do Rceut until tho untoucbablo and un speakable nre reached at tho lowest t'epth. If may be urged that tho separation between the Rrahmnn and. let us nay, tho Kurral market gardener is no wider than that between tho peer of the United Kingdom and tho coal miner. Thcro is this essential difference thnt It Is Imposslblo for an Indian to chnngo his caste. Tho coal miner may be elected to parliament, may become a cabinet minister nnd If ho can make money enough may marry his bod to a duke's daughter. Tho Kurml must remnln a vKurml. Alt tho wealth of CrocsuB will not en nblo him to inako an nlllanco with A llrahmnn family or to touch n Urnh mau's hand. Tho mombers of a casto may and in soino cases do rnlso them selves In tbo sight of other castes by ndoptlug moro elaborate ceremonies, nnd moro scrupulous observances. A half civilized Gond, for example, mny And himself brought Into contact with Hindus ns tho plow encroaches on the forest. II o tries to raise his po sition and add to his self respect by ndoptlug tho cxcluslvcncss of his Hin du neighbors. Ho will oven outdo them If he can, nnd If the Hindu Is scrupulous nbout his food tbo convert will wnBh the very wood with which his dinner Is cooked. No endeavors of this kind, however. will avail to lessen by a hair's breadth - the dlRtanco between him nnd the caste Hindu or even to induce the Hindu barber to look upon hi in ns a client whoso chin ho may slinvo and whose toe nails ho may paro without deiirnditMon. Another point connected with caste which tins a very practical bearing nnd must bo taken Into account is the power of coorclon which it gives to the brotherhood. If a man Is excommuni cated by his caste fellows nobody In the cnsto will marry Jilin or will nc cept water from his hnnds or will ent with him. If he Is tnnrrlcd his wlfo will not touch him or speak to him. Ho Is dead to bis family. Thu priest will uot perform ccremqulcs for him, Tho vll Inge barber will not shave him. und tho washerwoman will not wash his clothes. Theso aro the motbods of bringing pressure on tho man. Tho , strictest boycott which Irishmen havo invented Is mild compared to the Unnl sentence of n cnsto punchayat. A system like this Is a stem fact which has to bq faced. There Is not a police case or n civil case or a trial nt the sessions, there Is burdly an np polntment to uu oQlce lu ludlu of . whutuvcr degree. In which the matter of caste baH uoVto bo considered. It forces Ituejf Into every assessment of luud revenue, into every adjudication of rnut, It affects tho administration of Justice, tho proceedings of muulcl pnl nud district councils. The tulluenco "nud power of the llrahmnn nnd tho Idea that ho Is abovo tho law nud Is not to bo pun lshoil as other twmltt aro Mill nllvo, although century of British Justice has dooo tsouictblng toward erndlcat tug them. On tbo other bund, tbo sug .gestlon tbnt a man of n lower cnsto might rlso to an equality or nearer , to uu equality with members of a caBto abovo him is unthinkable. Where tho low caste tuwu nre, there they must remnln, If tboy behave themselves It, will be made up to them In a futuro existence. Loudon Spectator. Politeness Is u locksmith and opens ninny (lliilc'iilt doom. GREAT SALT LAKE. An Imminit Freih Water Sea Some Thousand! of Yeara Ago. In glacial times Great Salt lako'was a magnificent fresh water lnko the slzo of Lako Huron that Is, about 18,000 nqunro miles and had Its outlet Into tho Port Neuf, tho Snnko and tho Co Itimbln rivers. This was nt least 10,000 years ago, but slnco thnt titno tho ell innto has becomo arid, nnd not enough water has fallen over tho Great basin to supply that lost by evaporation. Consequently tho lako has ceased to flow from its outlet and gradually dried up from over a thousand feet deep to fifteen feet nnd from 18,000 square miles in nren to less than 1,700. It Is now seventy miles long and about thirty wide, but Is beautiful still and Is tho homo of myriads of nen birds and other waterfowl. It Is tho great resort of tbo pcoplo of Utah, for from 3,000 to C.000 visit Its shores dally In the summer, and many bathe In Its waters. The lako contains about 7,000.000,000 tons of salt. When the lako Is high tho salt is so diluted that It has gono down to 11 per cent. When It Is low, as It was uot many years ngo, it reached satura tion which for the mixed ingrcQlcnts of the water is 30 per cent. There Is nothing mysterious about It any moro thrfh thcro would bo about n teacup with u tcaspponful of salt in tho bottom. If a tablcspoonful of water were put In tho cup on tho' salt It would tnsto very salty, but If tho cup were fljlcd to the brim with water It would ho. Tho salt has cotno from tho water of the rivers (lowing Into it since it censed to flow from its outlet. All river water contains salt, and tho an nual evaporation of from two to five cubic miles of this water leaves large quantities of salt behind, and so It has accumulated for thousands of years. A DREAM JOURNEY. It Was n Very Long Ono, but It Took Only a Few Minutes. "Dreams nro curloim things," re- innrked the nmateur psychologist. 'Tlmo docs not seem to enter Into their composition nt all. For Instance, tho other day 1 was sitting on the porch of a hotel with n friend of mine smoking nfer lunch. It wns n drow sy day, nnd conversation lagged. Pres ently I saw ,my friend uoddlug in his chair. He had dozed off, holding his lighted clgnr In his left hand, which wns folded over his right. His left hand relaxed, and tho end of tho cigar cume In gentlo contact with the right hand, Inflicting n slight burn. " 'The dovll It won'tl cxclnlmcd un friend, waking with a start. "Tho sentence sounded so Incongru ous that 1 burst out laughing. 'Won't whntV I asked. " 'How long hnvo 1 been nsleep?' he asked. " 'Not moro than a couplo of min utes,' 1 replied. ' 'It doesn't seem possible,' he said. 'During thnt tlmo 1 had a dream thnt pretty nearly took mo nround the world. I suited for Southampton, did England, France, Switzerland und n part of Italy, then through tho orient to India. It was In India that 1 bo- came much lutcrcsted In one of the native snake charmers. He had tho snakes crawling all over him nnd of fered mo one to fondle. I told him 1 was afraid It would blto me. Ho as sured mo that it wouldn't, and 1 took the reptile In my hand. "I explained the episode of the light ed cigar," concluded tho amateur psy chologist, "and wo both laughed." .Sew York Sun, Southoy'a Industry. Perrot told them the story, nnd when Duproz laughed nt him Perrot said: "Why, surely you need not laugh. If I am ugly I am certainly not so ugly nB either of you." Tho pastor of tho Ilttlo country church had been much annoyed by having tho mombers of his congregation strngglo in long after the sorvlco had begun. Ono Sunday morning, when ho felt thnt further forbearance with this fault wns impossible, ho decided to rcbuko some conspicuous offender. About twenty minutes Inter than tho proper hour thcro entered n mild mannered little woman, one of tho regular attendants of the church, but quite Incorrigible In her tardiness. The minister looked up. fixed her with bis spectacles nnd re marked: "Sister, you nro very much behind time. I hopo you will not bo so late lit getting Into henven." Tho Ilttlo woman looked up, Bmllcd Bweotly nnd without a trace of confu sion replied placidly: "I shan't care about that, doctor, so long ns 1 get there."' And now tho pastor feels that the smile that went round tho church some how spoiled the effectiveness of his reprimand. Now York Tribune. Chinese and the Morse Code. Then It was Imposslblo to treat Chi nese phonetically, writing" down the sound of the Chlneso words In Euro penn letters nud translating them Into Morso dots nnd dashes, because no such system could deal with the Chl neso niceties of Intonation.
