Plays that don't live are those that are made up usually of pure fancy, imaginative figments that impress even the most careless that their stories have been pieced together mechanically. The characters in plays of. this class don't seem real to an audience, nor do their speeches seem natural. Watching a machine-made ftlay is like listening to n phonograph with a moving picture at tachment. The performance is distract ing, but not convincing. Plays thnt live on the other hand may be said to have people of real flesh and blood for their personages nnd stories of strange interest nnd sure conviction for their basis. "The Old Homestead" is a play of the lattor class. "Our New Min ister," the newest play by the same authors, is another real play of the same sort that promises to live as long as its Ilustrious predecessor.
