And now Haskell, the deposed
treasurer of the national democratic
committee, threntens to file a criminal
libel against President Roosevelt as
Boon an the Intters' term expires. This
is generally the thrent of those who
are guilty as charged.
Will the farmers of Lincoln county
vote against six cent hogs, fifty cent
corn, forty cent oats, six cent beef and
cevcnty-flvc or eighty cent wheat? Do
th 'y expect democratic success to bring
higher prices? Did democratic success
in the past bring higher or lower
prices? Those are pertinent questions.
President Roosevelt's interest and
activity in thia campaign is increasing
and there arc those who would not be
nurpritied if he were to tako the stump;
not because ho thinks such action is
necessary to Insure Taft's success, but
rather on account of his inclination to
be in the thick of the fray.
Taht's western tour Is proving a
winnerj.everywhere ho is receiving tro
mcndouH ovations. Ho is not a spell
binder, but his plain words, honestly
spoken, and his personality attracts
the people and entnusos them. Here
in Nebraska, the home of Bryan, he has
been as enthusiastically received as elsewhere.
As a result of republican over-confidence
and democratic activity the Taf t
managers were given a scaro a few
weeks ago. Bryan had aroused his
democratic supporters, but apathy
seemed to prevail within republican
ranks, Apathy indicated contentment
and contentment reflected support for
Taft, but moro manifest interest and
enthusiasm were necessary to insuroa
full voto. Thus the speech-making
tour of Judge Taft was planned, and it
has had tho desired effect in stirring re
publicans to action.
Siiallenrerger is tho candidate for
governor of tho democratic and populist
parties. As a democrat standing on
tho democratic nlatform. ho is in favor
of tho fullest measure of personal liber
ty aim especially or scli-government
for cities. As a populist, standing on
tho populiHt platform, ho is also in favor
of county option. In Omaha and South
Omaha ho can bo for local llccnso and
in u country community for county op
tion. But suppose ho should have a
mixed audience and try to equaro him
self on tho two platforms what do you
