Picndino the action of a general convention to be held at Ilazlcton in a few days all minora in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania have quit work. The committee having the matter in charge did not care to take it upon them selves to declare a strike, but ordered all miners to suspend work until the matter be fully considered by a general conven tion composed of 1,000 delegates. It is believed that this convention will declare in favor of a strike and that it will be one that will take months to settle. The de mand of the miners is for shorter hours, increase of wages and the correction of abuses. About 150,000 workmen will be effected D. 10. Thompson and his politi cal associates have issued a cir cular inviting subscriptions for stock In a daily evening news' paper to be published in Lincoln. The company is to be organized with a capital stock of $50,000 to be fully paid up at the time of or ganization. "We presume the paper is to be the official organ of the U. & M, Ry. and one of its chief misstons to further the political ambitions of Thompson. As tiiic result of a volcanic eruption last Friday on the island of Martinique, the city of St. Pierre was obliterated and the loss of life is placed at 25,000.
