Grant Privilogos to Gas Company. The city council, at its meetings held Tuesday, Wednesday and last eyuningH, passed in the successive stages an ordinance granting to Colby & Tcnny, of Chicago, the privilege of laying underground gas mams in the streets and alleys of the city. As we understand it, the main object of Colby & Tcnny is to fui nisli a gasoline gas for licatiug and cooking purposes, and incidentally furnish lights to those who desire such. The maximum price of this gas as proyided in the ordinance is two dollars per thousand feet. Mo provision is made in the ordinance for gas posts on the streets, and from this it is inferred that the firm will make no attempt to se cure a lighting contract from the city In a conversation Mr. Colby stated that his firm would in all probability make connections from the street mains into the houses free ot charge and will also furnish the meter free. It is expected to have the plnnt in operation by the first of July next. Archdeacon Webber ot Milwau kee, one ot the ablebt ministers in the Episcopal church, will hold a mission in tlih city the l.mt week in May. He v. Mr. Webber was here a couple ol years ago and delivered a sermon or two that were so well received that effort 8 have been made to have lutn :ome and hold a mission, but it was impossible for him to take the time until the present. Tho Straugo Adventures of Jack and the Beanstalk. This brilliant success will be offered at the opera house next Tuesday evening, when with all the famous novelties, gorgeous cos tumes and wonderful effects which characterised the presentation eUcwhere, will 1e given together with an exceptional cast ot many favorites and the score of Mr I Sloane is one of the important fua- iuru, lurniauiug ucitciuus inuaii; ruuni.ug. through each act, while Uaruet's work introduces char, acters familiar to us in nursery rhymes and .fables dear to us in childhood, including ".Mother Goose" and the "Arabian Nights" including Mother Hubbard, Jack Sinbad, Little Miss Mulfett, King Ok, the giant and a host of others. There are the pretty maidp, good fairies, fascinating marches and balltti', forming in all a series ol almost bewildering attractions and wonder to the auditors. It is gen erally conceded that "Jack" has more actual merit in its cleanliness of htory and perfection throughout than any other extravaganza here tofore olTcred, and its career of con tinued triumphs is one of the best proofs of what it is. Biff Acreago of Sugar Hocto. Henry S. Fcrrar, resident mana ger of the Grand Island sugar fac tory, spent Wednesday in town on business connected with his posi tion. In a talk with Mr. Ferrar we learned that over eight hundred acres of sugar beets have been contracted for in Lincoln county for the coming season and he is san guine that future contracts will raUcthc acreage to one thousand. Ot the number contracted, '100 acres are in the vicinity of Maxwell, over 300 in the Heruhcy and Sutherland section and 100 acres near Un city. Mr, Kcrrar is well pleased with the acreage contracted for in this county and is confident that when the beets are harvested next sea son the growers will be exceedingly well pleased with the returns.
