Tun way mailers are shaping' themselves il is evitlont that the issue prior to and in the rcpubli can state convention will be Savage and anti-Savage. So far as Tine Tkiiil'.vk is concerned, it will oppose the rcnomination of Savage, and in this stand it will be backed by the republicans of this county and the west part of the state. In this struggle Uart leyism and boodlcisin will be arrayed against clean, decent men and clean politics, and we believe the latter will win. The mass of the republicans do not approve of Savage's action in the Hartley case, and if the state convention is controlled by him and his friends and his nomina tion is secured, it means his cer tain defeat at the polls. Of this latter there is no question. Kici'HKSIcntativks of organized labor in California appeared be fore the committee of foreign affairs at Washington yester day and advocated the complete exclusion of the Chinese. They argued that by cheap living the Chinese arc able to enter the labor field and work for wages that respectable American work men could not afford to take. In certain portions of the Pacific coast the Chinese practically monopolize the labor field. Tim ways and means commit tee of the house will present to congress a bill repealing all war revenue taxes except that on mixed Hour. The reduction fol lowing the enactment of the bill is estimated at sixty million dollars. While a portion of the war expense is still going on. yet because of the great prosperity of the country and the great in crease of revenues, the govern ment is enabled to wipe out the war tax. Tun bill introduced in con gress for the leasing of public domain is ardently supported by large stockmen, but by the smaller ranchmen is regarded as a "freeze out" measure. We arc inclined to believe that the views of the latter are correct and that concerted action by the small stock growers should be taken to oppose the measure. I... . . - - 11. l .1 OIIAIK.MAN I'AVNK 01 U1C W.'iyS and means committee has assured the beet sugar men that there will be no revision of the Cuban tariff. The statement is regarded as final and has quieted grave fears of the success of sugar beet culture in Nebraska. A business man yesterday in HpcaUing of taxation remarked that if a man had ouu thoimaud dollars ut jjold and repotted it to the auscHHur he would, under the present leyy be taxed eighty doHam per year on the Hum. In making thin statement the aforesaid busi- iiuhh man rIiowh pitiable ignorance or else desires to pervert the facts. Property in thin county ih assessed at one-fifth its actual valuation and money is at-Hcsocd at that rate. It therefore follows that one thousand dollars in gold would have an assessed valuation of two hundred dollars, and at the present rate of taxation the tax on the one tliotib. and dollars would be sixteen in stead of eighty dollars per year. In discussing taxation and bond propositions let us deal with the truth. Fred DeFord who has been rail roading for the past five or ti. ears with hindquarters at Otumu a, Iowa, arrived in town Inst nllit lor a visit with relatives over 111. Henry'n Mlnsfrols. From all sides comes the general verdict of the press and public that Hi- Henry's Big Modern Minstrels is a Corker. In eaten ntr for the lead Mr. Henry has no easy cinch, but that he is very close to the mark is the general opinion ol all who hayc seen bis superb show. They traveling a special train of pri vate palace cars, they carry a car load of special scenery of the most c'aboratc design, they mount their first part with costly electrical effects and gorgeous satin cos tumes. They permit nothing old nor objectionable, their performers and features arc carefully selected and their program is unique and original. Kticore after encore greets their splendid entertain ment and bursts of laughter and shouts of approval resound lrom start to finish. They will be at Lloyd's opera Iioubc on February Uh and every one who enjoys a hearty laugh and lots of fun should secure their tickets at once, which arc now on sale at Stamp's. Though the revolutionary war closed about a hundred and twenty years ago the government is still J (laying pensions to a number ol revolutionary soldiers' widows. Old soldiers marry late in life and pick out the youngest and toughest so that their names may be long in the laud. ICiirhtv-fivc years hence we shall he paying pensions to widows of soldiers of the civil war and in the year 2022 widows of the men now in the Phillippiues will be drawing their little quarterly checks.
