This augurs well ior a bountiful crop ' - if. ! !J 1 ! it.. even in the semi-arid section of the state, and farmers are correspond ingly hopeful. The spring starts out much like that of 1891, the year of thc banner crops in Nebcraska. The efforts dl thc Indiana dele gation and others to induce Bryan to forsake 16 to 1 has been unavail ing and "Billy's only concession has been that it be civen a subsidiary place in the platform. The "dis- aster" of 18 1b certain to be re- peatcd, notwithstanding the level headed democrats of thc country have been striving to ward off the fatal blow. Tiiosu democrats who expect to win thc national election this fall by thc "mistakes',' of the republi cans, should heed the words, of Grovcr Cleveland who says the" democracy cannot trlumnh solelv bv the mistakes of its opponents, but must itself da something to show that it Is worthy of power. The honest man will admit without de bate that the democrats nave so far made no, exhibition of. their worthiness to govern. Senator mason introduced a joint resolution, in tne senate Frl day requesting the president to withdraw the forces as rapidly as possible irom Cuba, and "that on thft Fourth of July, 1900, nil civil and military power of the United States be turned ovcr and sur- rendered- to the people of Cuba." A tnaioritv of the neonle of the United States will not believe with Mason s , , , that the conditions in Cuba arc such as will wairant the withdraw- al of the troops and the surrender of t he island at the t me HneeiHcd. it is quite procaine that thc re. Dult of the. middle-of-the-road popu list national convention at Cincin nati will be the nomination of 13ugcne Debs and the amalgation of nil socialistic parties with the mid-roadcrs. When this is ac complished, says thc Sate Journal, the line up will be about as follows: The republicans will stand f6r reasonable conservatism, the popu lists will be for extreme radicalism and the democrats will stand for anything that promises to bring them ofiiccH, that our sales to the Orient are rapidly growing is shown by the latc&tcxport figures of thc bureau ot statistics, While; there has been a continued growth in our exports during the past fiscal year, by far the largest percentage of gain has I been In our trade with the Orient. To Kuropc, our exports. during the eight months ending with Febru ary, increased 5.4 per cent, as com pared with the corresponding months of thc preceding fiscal year; to South America, 8 per cent to North America, 3.3 per cent; to Asia, 38 per cent; to Oceania, 51 per cent, or to Asia and Oceania combined, 44 per cent; while to Africa there was a slight reduction owing to the disarrangement ot commercial conditions there, by reason of the hostilities. Taking our exports aQ a whole, it is found that the increase during the eight months Iiub been ') per cent, while the increase to Asia and Oceania has been 41 per cent. It is believed that the house will pass the Nicaragua canal bill. It is one of the most important pieces of legislation before congress and the sooner the canal is completed the better it will be for all Ameri can commercial and agricultura 11- tcrcsts, hb well as for the position of the United States as a world power. Takino the entire year of 1899, and the five islands, or groups of islands, Cuba, Porto Kico, and the Hawaiian, Philippine and Somoati islands, the total for the year shows an increase of more than 100 per cent in exports to those islands over the year 1898, while the nn ...... ,,,.. ... j,1(.r(,.;B ncary fift r CCMt ovcr t108C Two members of the ways and means committee of the house, Dol- liver and Tawncy, hold that the oleomargiuc act expressly provides that manufacturers shall make , grcdicnl8 of okomar. garinc in order that officials of the hrovcrnment mav determine ivheth- sub8tance9 deleterious to public ,calth afe U3C(j TllCyhopetO have the matter discussed in the i.0UBC m.,., trca9Urv apcilt i.aa or,lcrC(1 a 8pccial agcut to procccd to thc paciiccoa8t t0 invcatiirate the mat- tcr of Ule largc ,nflux o japanc8e cooHc8 t0.t, , Coi,lltry wUhJn tllc J past few montliB. The question is still troubling the immigration of ficials. Until two or three months ago tuc immigration ot Japanese to the United States was small. It has increased so as to excite suspicion that the men are coming here as contract laborers.
