Queen Victoria is said to. be getting
increasingly feeble in her powers of
locomotion and has to be carried up
steps or the smallest rise of ground. But
whatever may bo her physical condition,
her mental powers are absolutely unim
paired, and her capacity for work is un
diminished. She takes increased in
terest, too, in matchmaking, and has of
late repeatedly expressed her opinion
that the poorer prirfces of the younger
branches of the royal house of England
ought to marry into the wealthy aris
tocracy of Great Britain, ns Prince
Adolpnus of Teck is about to do.
Tho courage of the pop and demo-pop
newspapers in Xebraska isn't equal to
their alleged convictions. Every last
man jack of a pop editor proclaims his
belief that a contest of Holcomb's elec
tion would develop tho fact that his
plurality was 15,000 instead of 3,202,
but at tho same time covers with stereo
typed abuse and well worn epithets a
foot and a half deep, any republican who
suggests that lie would like to have the
count investigated a little. Why this
arrant cowardico if .Mr. Holcoinb can
show up 12,000 more votes? What are
you afraid of, if it isn't the shadow of
tho frauds that you suspect your fine
workers perpetrated on election day?
No honest man can object to an investi
gation. Journal.
A lending republican state senator of
Kansas says that it was Mr. Ingalls'
heart's desire to bo returned to tho
United States senate and that all his
talk about being 'a candidate not now,"
and that ho would wait for his ''old seat
Peffor's seat,"' was only for effect. Ho
said tho ex-senator wanted to be re
turned to public life at tho earliest
opportunity and that ho would not take
any chances in waiting for Pelfer's time
to expire if he should see an opportunity
of succeeding Martin this winter. An
argument in favor of Ingalls, tho state
senator said, was the fact that the re
publican party had had bad luck in
Kansas over since he was retired, in 1891.
This ho said would cause many mem
bers, and especially such as might be a
little superstitious in politics, to rally to
Ingalls' support should ho go into the
race this winter.

What a pity it is that Bayard doesn't
resign, so that Wilson could be sent to
London as Ambassador. The English
love him so.
Our democratic friends say it was the
stay-at-home vote. If that be true
whence catuo tho increase of 2,000,000
republican votes over the vote of '02?
An eminent mathematician has ligured
it out that the amount lost to American
workingmen during the two years of
democratic misrule is a round $1,000,
000,000.
Governor Morton has filed a statement
showing that his campaign exponses
amounted to 619,790. Tho salary
amounts to $10,000 a year, so that at the
end of tho two-year term Mr Morton
will be long on glory and short ou cash.
Koll, the pop candidate for governor
in Alabama, has issued a manifesto de
claring that ho was elected governor
and will have the seat at all hazards.
Ho claims that ho was counted out, and
don't propose to stand it.
Whero now are tht prophets that two
years ago pronounced "tho republican
party dead and buried by democrats?"
The saviors of the republic and the
union tiro not tho kind of people to stay
dead, as the facts show.
Even Texas polled 70,000 republican
votes. If the growth of intelligence has
the same ratio during tho next two
years that it had in the last two the
election of a republican president may
be mado unanimous.
Since tho advent of tho democratic
party into power a little over two years
ago. it has succeeded in adding S100,
000,000 to tho interest bearing debt
against tho government. And this is
tho kind of ''reform" wo hear so much
about.
Three citizens of Chicago nominate
W. J. Bryan as tho democratic candi
date for president in 1896 and suggest
Senator Bacon of Georgia as his running
mate . The latter predisposes tho ticket
to fat frying propensities, which mili
tates agaist genuine reform.
Had the country chosen presidential
electors this ywsrtlio republicans would
have secured 324 votes iu tho electoral
college to 120 for tho democrats. The
'lead may not be so formidable in 1890,
but it will still bo largo enough to keep
tho election out of tho house of repre
sentatives by a comfortable majority
By Sulloway. congressman-elect from
the First New Hampshire district, is a
is a character in his way. Primarily a
criminal lawyer, in politics a democrat,
then a green backer and now a republi
can, ho has latterly been a devotee in tho
ranks of tho Salvation army captain.
He is six feet six in his stockings, can
kick like a Kilgore and talk from his
boots up.
The democratic mills are not like tho
mills of the gods that "grind slow."
They have only been grinding a year and
nino months but long enough to grind
adversity into millions of homes; to add
100,000,000 to tho national debt and to
produce and cultivate animosities among
the nations of tho world that will ba a
bar to commerco for years to come.
The new czar of Russia continues to
give evidence of liberality. Ho favors
a great freedom of tho press, and has de
clared his intentions to abolish tho
secret court police, whoso business it is
to protect the czar and his court, and to
terminate the state of siege, which puts
everything under military rule. It
seems that a new political life is to bo
gin in Russia, but tho great difficulty is,
that tho mass of Russian people is
uneducated and ignorant.
Tho ronfession of Henri Watterson
that the democratic party has lost its
honor without saving its bacon ex
presses the situation perhaps better than
any other formula that has been pro
posed. The loss of tho bacon will bo
considered by most of the great army of
office-seekers in the party as tho most
serious, but tho rank and file of the
democracy, the common people to whom
the party was dear from inheritance and
tradition, will mostly grieve over tho
loss of its honor.
In Alabama trouble is to bo expected,
as Kolb, who pretends to have been
cheated out of tho governorship by
democratic election frauds, states that
he is going to be seated as governor
while tho present Governor Jones de
clares that tho democratic Governor
Oates is elected and "by the grace f
God" (which probably means by the
bullet of the militia) will bo installed.
Kolb mav bo arrested for treason.
The California fruit-shipping industry
may be revolutionized by the invention
of an Alameda preacher, who has de
signed a refrigerator car in which car
bonic acid gas will be used to preserve
the fresh fruit. A test carload has just
arrived in San. Francisco after a trip lo
New Orleans. Although nearly two
weeks in tho car the fruit is in good condition.
Tho success of Mrs. Annie M. Beam,

The Grand Duko of Baden, who has
showen his anger at dismissal of Count
Caprivi by Emperor William, is, with j
the possible exception of tho King of
rJaxony, tho most popular and influen
tial ruler in Germany. He married the
only daughter of the old Emperor Wil

admirer of Prince Bismarck. It will be
a sorry thing for tho Kaiser if he fail to
appease him, as his influence in the
maintenance of German unity has beeu
greater than that of almost any other
ruler. Ho is considered one of the hand

Mr. J. C. Boswell, one of tho best

! Tho report which comes from Gary,
S. D., that an effort is to bo mado to
split off a largo section of the republican
party immediately after the next na
tional convention in case tho platform
is not strongly in favor of free silver has
thus far failed to shake tho firmament.
It is possible that a new party will be
formed for a campaign in 1S1KI, with a
platform demanding protection and free
coinage, but it will be made up largely
of tho leavings of the late democratic
explosion. Tho republicans have neither
the timo nor tho inclination to go into
that sort of business. Journal.

Mohammedanism seems bent upon tho
destruction of Christianity in Armenia.
The recent massacre of 10,000 people is
only one of ten in a series. Six occurred
prior to 1835, one in 18G0, and tho others
in 187G, 1S78 and 1894. Armenia now
has a population or about 5,000,000. Will
the christian nations of. tho world quietly
look on while tho Turk wreaks his ven
geance? Is there no redress for these
poor sufferers? Their condition to-day
is most deplorable, and appeals to tho
humanity of the world. Turks should
be told to let the christians of Armenia
alone, and if they fail to comply the uu
speakable Turk should bo blotted out of

It seems indeed that tho new cazar of

Gen. Vannnski, tho minister of war, has
