The Ulysses Dispatch man gives the following opinion of modern style: "If Eve had worn bangs, a bustle and a big hat when she first burst upon the sight of Adam, that gentleman would have run away from his boarding house and taken to the woods." North Carolina is sparsely settled' and it is a strange iact that al though it is three times as large as Massachusetts, its largest-city, Wil mington, boasts of only 20,000 inhabitants. They differ in different individuals to some extent. A billions man is seldom a breakfast eater. Too frequently, alas he has an excellent appetite for liquids bat none for solids of a morning. His tongue will hardly bear inspection at any time; if it is not white and furred, it is rough, at all events. The digestive system is wholly oat of order and Diarrhea or Consumption may be a symptom or the two may alternate. There are often Hemor rhoids or even loss of blood. There may be gid diness and often headache andacidity or flatu lence and tenderness in. the pit of the stomach, To correct all this if not effect a care try Green's Aagast Flower, it cost but a trifle and thousande attest ita efficacy. The question of wages is the core of the tariff argument. The steel rails manufactured here stand for better paid labor than the English rails. At every stage of the com plex process of converting the raw material of the mines into the fin ished product, higher wages have been paid to American workmen than the corresponding classes of foreign workmen receive. The tariff protects the mine, the handlers of the ore in shipment by rail or water, and every group of mechanics employed in furnace, foundry or rolling mill. At every stage labor is protected and wages are raised above the European level. The finished product represents bet ter paid labor all the way from the mine to the road bed where the rails are laid. The tendency of Demo cratic legislation is to lower the standard of wages in every field of industry. Republican legislators have always protected American labor and will continue to do so. New York Tribune. Prof. E. Stone Wieeins says that the next earthquake period in this country will begin Aug. 19, 1904. The Queen Seriously HI. This does not refer to the Queen of England, but to the queen of a household at Lincoln. Neb., where she rules by common consent. "In March last, when six months old, our, baby was taken down with what the, physicians called "bron chitis" (an ordinary cold)' and wa3 very sick for two weeks; she seemed to be filled deep in the chest with phlegm which we were unable to loos en; she could not lie down at all, but had to be held upright else it caused her to cough severely; the physician did not give her any relief, although the prescriptions were changed every day and sometimes twice a day; this treatment was con tinued about ten days and we finally determined to try a bottle of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. We obtained a bottle and after giving a few doses she was relieved, breathing easier and throwing off the phlegm and getting to sleep, getting well in a few days, and we believe we owe her life to the use of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. Our oldest girl is subject to croup and has had several severe attacks but the Cough Remedy has brought her out all right with but two good doses and we would not go over night without a bottle in the house. We have great faith in it." Signed, WiU burE. Wells, Lulie L. Wells, 1831 C stieet, Lin coln, Nebraska. Sold by C. W. Price and F. H. Longley. "YrwH triflo with any Throat or V Lung Disease. WARNER, The gist of Cardinel Manning's recent utterances on socialism is as follows: "All men are bound by natural obligations, if they can, to feed the hungry. But it may be said that granting the obligation in the giver does not prove a right to the receiver. To which I answer that the obligation to feed the hun gry springs from the natural right of every man to life, and to the food necessary for the sustenance of life. So strict is this natural right that it prevails over all positive laws of property. Necessity has no law, and a starving man has a natural right to his neighbor's bread." It should be remembered that Don's conviviality sometimes leads to an exuberance of spirits which causes him to place a high estimate upon the Cameron influ ence in Pennsylvania. Blair Pitvt. Are There Other Habitable Worlds? Prof. Grant in Good Worlds: Here again we have only conjecture to guide us. With respect to the bodies constituting the solar system, which from their comparative prox imity to the earth might be suppos ed to furnish a solution to this problem, careful observations have heretofore offered no indication whatever of the existence of life upon their surfaces. But life in some form or other may, notwith standing, exist on those bodies. We must bear in mind that the planets are in all probability in various stages of development. It may be reasonably presumed that the planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, in conseauence of their enormous bulk, have cooled down more slowly than the earth and the other smaller planets of the solar system, and are therefore less advanced as abodes of animated ex istence than the latter are. But even in the age of the "earth it must be admitted to have revolved mil lions before life appeared on its sur face, and even after it had cooled down and become the abode of ani mated existence it produced, during countless millions or years more, life only in its lowest forms. The existence of man is but of yester day. This is an instructive lesson. It teaches us that although man ex ists on the earth's surface it does not follow that beingsj)f the same order of intelligence as man exist upon all the other planets or even upon any of them. Upon some of the planets life may jot have yet uuiue imu -existence upon umera life may exist, but in a less advanced stage than upon the earth: and the same remark is obviously applicable to the numberless bodies of the star- m mm n I 1 ry ftrraanent. The state or tne question then is this: We cannot pronounce positively upon the ex- 5 l f 1 "i 1 . 3 1.1- - istence or nte anywnere oevona iue planet upon which we dwell. But reasoning from analogy, we may sunnosfi that certain, if not all. of the other bodies of the planetary system, which m so many respects bear a strong affinity to our own planet, are in like manner the abodes of life in some form or an other, and that similarly there are countless bodies in the. stellar re- onnns which mav nlsft he abodes OI ife. This is a question, however. unoii wnicn the noble science uj. astronomy, so distinguished for the exactitude of its conclusions, does not venture to pronounce a positive opinion, seeing that there exists no sure basis of facts available for its consideration. Tn these circum stances it is left for each individual inquirer to form his own opinion independently of anv support deriv ed from scientific Authority Kept at the Bar. t Keith'a Block, Front Street.
