There was n hint of snow In the all and the sky wns dark with clouds as Fred Whltton hurriedly stepped around the corner mid Into the side street that evening In Jimiinry. Olive Gny's home was on the corner and he had promised to rail on her and lielp her take some goodies to "Aunt Den ny." as she wns called by the people of the neighborhood. Aunt Iehly lived nlone In n stnnll cottage set buck from the street, and the young people enjoyed going to see her as much as she enjoyed hnvlng them come, for wonderful Indeed were the stories with which she entertained them stories of n time long pnst, and of which she usually was the heroine. Fred hnxtencd along, thinking It would lie best to take his own bundles first and then return to call for Olive. As that mennt thnt Aunt Debhy was either 111 or very tired, and had gone to bed. be stepped Into the little porch to place the bundles In a large box, which had been so warmly Interlined that food left In It would not be like ly to freeze during the night. As be stooped In the darkness to open the cover of the box, some one suddenly attempted to rise, and there was a moment of confusion; and squeals, grunts and the dropping to the floor of heavy parcels could be heard. A frightened woman gasped, and Fred instantly decided thnt Olive had tired of watting for him, and had started on ahead. Anticipating a wild scrcnm, he said quickly: "Don't be frightened, dear! It's only Fred!" and nttempted to stendy her by passing bis arm around her slender waist ; but to his surprise his arm did not stop as soon as he ex pected It to, but kept traveling on, for the waist was a very large one. There would certainly be a screnm now, he thought, and poor Aunt Debby would be awakened, and her nerves would be upset for the rest of the night; so placing his hand over the mouth of the stout lady, he propelled her to the street. Ills captive wns Sally Eaton, a girl who dearly loved a Joke. For some time she had been making odd, chok ing sounds, but he knew she was shak ing with laughter, and If he removed his hand now her laugtiter could be heard for a distance, or else he'd get n large piece of Sally's mind. Neither of those things happened, however, ns she only Inughed softly now and then, after be explnlned why he had done ns he did. "Hut I'm won dering," she chuckled, "did you think at first that It was I you met on he porch?" "I wasn't sure who It was," he answered tactfully, but bis fnce burned. When she left him at the corner she railed back softly and mockingly: "Of course, you won't tell Olive I" And Olive, waiting Impatient ly on the back porch with her parcels beside her saw them, nnd heard Sully's words. Without answering. Fred ran hastily up the front steps and rang the bell, and Olive passed through the house to the front door nnd met him, nnd together they started to go to Aunt Debby's cottage. Olive spoke seldom ns they pnssed along, nnd answered Fred's comments shortly. After a while she asked : "Why were you so lnte?" And he an swered truthfully enough: "I took nj.v parcels first, so I could help you with yours," but be did not mention Sal ly's name. After that she was more quiet even, nnd the return from the cottage wns made almost In silence, for Fred's thoughts nlso were Interest ing. Snlly called the next day, nnd with the thought uppermost of paying Fred for treating her so unceremoni ously, she changed the story a little In many ways, nnd gave Olive the Im pression that Fred and she had walked to the cottage together. Mischief-loving Sally went away smiling, but there was an angry sparkle In Olive's eyes, nnd when Ferd called that evening she was not at home. The same thing happened many evenings, and then Fred stopped call ing. After that, Solly got tired of teas ing; nnd, relenting, told Olive the true story. "I think he thought at first that It was you he met on the porch," she said with a reminiscent giggle. That evening, with her wraps on, ready for a walk, Olive watched from the window of the unllghted sitting room, and when she saw Fred passing, she ran down the steps and, much to his surprise, greeted him with the warm smile to which he had been ac customed until of late. With a blush and a laugh, she said: "Good evening, Fred; cold weather, isn't itr A warming glow stole over him as he grasped her hands. "For the last two weeks it has been almost cold enough to freeze a fellow's heart," be grumbled ruefully, "and the few words you have spoken to me have been so like icicles that they have chilled me through, but now that you are smiling again, I may not mind the weather so much. "What was it all about, anyway V As they walked slowly along, she told him how well Sally had succeeded In her plan to tease, and her voice was a bit unsteady and her eyes were wet. "Let's forget It I" he said, comfort ingly, and as she smiled at him through glistening tears, the smile she met was roguish. Hastily pulling down his coat collar and putting his gloves in hie pockets, he said: "There's a remark ible change in the weather. Ill say I regular January thaw has set in."
