COMEBACKS
By JACK VEIOCK
International News S porta Editor
,,IIA11K,, SPENCER
Edward R. "Hack") Spencer un
doubtedly pulled one of the greatest
comebacks that has erer been re
corded in baseball annals.
The big. flabby catcher who came
to the St. Louis Browns from the
Waco, Tex., club awsy back In 1905
lias had a career In the national pas-
time that reads like romance, and.
although this year finds him in the
Taciflc Coast League once again, his
comeback remains none'the less re-
markable.
Spencer was always a big, tubby
ort of a catcher, and from the time
he broke Into fast company until he
trnnmfi n .ukt 11,. h.hti
fans in 1914 he had a reputation as
a happy-go-lucky citizen that ranked
aprnnrf in nnna in h.Koii
Spencer's great thirst nVfcved his
undoln "hut he wan rannhi when
sober and he had a habit of hitting
In the pinches, though he never
.threatened to win a batting cham
pionship. From 1905 to 1909 Snencer was a
member of the Browns. He next
played with the Red' Sox, figuring In
a trade for Lou Criger, and was later
shunted to St. Paul, where he spent
part oi me season or 1909 and the
1910 season. The next year found
"Hack" back again for a trial, this
time with the Philadelphia Nation-
als. But he failed and was sent
'back to St. Paul. Later he played
with Louisville and San Francisco.
Winding up with 'Frisco very sud
denly In 1913 Spencer dropped from
sight and Bought a lumber camp,
where he spent more than a year.
He mixed it with the rough lumber
Jacks, and while he foughrwith them
he was also fighting against Old King
Alcohol! Finally he acceded a job
tending bar in a mining town, and
He knew that if he could keep away
from the boo e there he had won his
battle. It was tough going for
Hack," but he won out, and aftar
Rnendine the lflir.-iR nooonno with
the VeYnon clubjie came back to the
big leagues a member of the Tigers.
Spencer was -recently given his
unconditional release by Detroit af-J
ter sDendine the 1917.18 noanonal
with Hughey Jennings, during which
he did yeoman service behind the
bat. He is still a good catcher and
should hare no' trouble holding his
own In the big minor league of the
faraway coast. .
