Ah! What a time that would have been to have lived, and seen old na ture build the heart of the American continent. A nearly mountain range, that died a burnln,' runs from Furnas county to Dawes and Sioux. Nearly volcanoes sprung in a dozen counties of Nebraska. The Goshen holeB, east to Llsco, swelled like a poisoned car cass, ami there today are rounded domes and anticlines of older rocks surrounded by the ttew, and neology points prophetic lingers 'to the de formation. Petroleum wizards will do the rest. Depositions of the Gerlng river and the llartvllle sea tell vividly the story. Out of the range of east Nebraska mountains. Over much of Nebraska land, the waters cumu lated in one great slow-moving stream that meandered westward until It encountered the lifted ridge of nearly mountains. It broke through these perhaps near Curtis, and moved northwesterly with In creasing velocity. The finer silts were carried in the currcrt, but tho coarse sand filled the river bed. We find them in the hills between tht Platte and In the Scottsbluff moun tains Partly broken and gone, part aenroded away, yet sufllcient re mains to easily trace the majestic current that left the corse grey and brown sands flocked with rectan Rttlar specks of black. Then step by- step the diminishing currents let the finer silts sink down. Ami over an the once bottom of the Pleistocene lake, from the Raw Hide Buttes to the Pawnee Buttes, are wind-perforated rocks and soft sand stones formed into wierd fantastic Bhapes. It gives identity to hills along the Red Cloud trail; It 1b the monument of the dying sea. The sun shines on whitened lifted rocks, the pale noon on ghastly forms that rose out of the ancient waters, while the places disturbed by the last upheaval, have been worn away by wind and storm and stream. The grains of glaconlte have wafted from the old ocean floor, along with other Bands. They are scattered over the Dawes and Furnas ridge and cover It for miles and miles. Is that the basis of our potash lakes? It 19 one conjecture, anyway. What's Hoover Going To Do Next? That's what people everywhere farmers and dealers and consumers are ashing.
