LOUIS DKNVER .KAST IIUFFAliO FOliT WOIITH KL l'ASO A Timely Enterprise The launching of the St. Joseph Stockor and Feeder Show in cer tainly a timely enterprise. The wonder is that some one did not set such a movement on foot sooner. But there is always a best time for everything, and without a doubt this is the most opportune year for giving the stocker and feeder show a start that will keep it going for many years to come. St. Joseph is the logical location for such a show, in view of the fact that sellers and buyers naturally turn to a "clean" market that is easily accessible to both. To quote from the pamphlet announcing the first St. Joseph Stocker and Feeder Show : "The feeding cattle sold on the St. Joseph market are the best found anywhere, comprising Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas natives; Colorados, both east and west slope; Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma Panhandlers, Texas and Oklahoma cattle grated in Kansas, Nebraska 6and hills and Montana cattle." HOHACE WOOD, President So. St. Joseph Why Not Nebraska Cop the Prizes? What reason is there why Nebraska ranchmen should not capture a large share of the liberal prizes offered at the St. Joseph stocker and feeder show, to be held September 16th and 17th. None, whatever. If they exhibit, they are practically sure of getting in on the prizes, wetter feeder cattle cannot be round than are raised in the west half of this state. We apeak of the prizes as being liberal, and they are. And when it is taken into consideration that the cattle exhibited will be sold at auction at the St. Joseph markets, and without doubt will bring top notch prices, it is easily seen that the prizes are just so much velvet for the winners. The Herald-Stockman earnestly desires to see Nebraska cattle men compete for these prizes, and win some of them, as they will if they exhibit. Already Nebraska ranch cattle have a 'splendid repu tation among feeders in the corn belt states, and that reputation is sure to be enhanced by proper representation at the first annual St. Joseph Stocker and Feeder Show. Announcement of this show, as well as of St. Joseph live stock commission houses to whom shipments may be made, will be found on this and the opposite page. Demand For Feeders Formerly the demand for cattle for feeders during the fall and winter depended entirely upon the corn crop, but a change is taking place to a considerable extent. Whether there is a "bumper crop" or not in the corn belt this year, there will be an immense demand for western Nebraska and Wyoming cattle for feeders' this fall. The ex tremely wet weather will make the corn crop short in some localities, on bottom and flat land, but in other localities the crop will be better than an average; besides that, there will be a lot of other stuff to feed in eastern Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois, and western Nebraska cattle have come to be favorites with the feeders of these states. The following editorial from (he Drovers Journal-Stockman of August 2nd gives, what we believe to be, a correct statement of the situation : Feeder buyers are getting nervous. There is no assur ance yet of a bumper corn crop but it is now certain that there is going to be a superabundance of rough feed of all kinds and the problem is what to do with it. Getting back into the breeding game has been a slow process in the middle West and most farmers are still in a. large measure depend ent on the far West for stock cattle and (ceding steers. It looks as if it was going to be a good year for feeding but getting the feeders is another thing. J. L. OR EN, Secretary So. St. Joseph W. S. WOOD. Mov W OIO D LIVE STOCK COMMISSION CO.
