Ord, Nebr., March 26 This morn ing at about 3 o'clock the fire alarm was sounded and the town was astir in short order. The cause was a Are in the H. L. Bartley Suitatorium. The first to note the presence of fire were Mrs. Chapman and her son, who occupy the telephone office next door to Hartley's. Smoke began to show itself and kept on Increasing. In all respects the symptoms were like they were at the last preceding fire, which was also In the Bartley place. Mrs. Chapman started an Investi gation and, finding that the night watch, H. D. Heuck, was also on the trail, she used the telephone, calling (he firemen, while Mr. Heuck ran to sound the alarm. Mr. Bartley was called, but no re sponse was had from him. The fire proved to be In the main room this time and had progressed so far that the place was filled with smoke, so that the exact location or the fire In the room could not be lo cated. It was later located In the southwest corner of the main room. The fire there was hardly extin guished when It was discovered that Dr. Haldeman's ofllgB was on fire in the laboratory room. The back win dow was broken In and the firemen were soon after this fire, finding It a bad place to work on account of the gases emanating therefrom. These were due of course to the burning of chemicals. But In due time this fire was also put out. An investigation this morning af ter daylight showed that the fire started in the extreme corner of the room at the end of the shelves that occupied the entire west wall. It burned the south half of, the shelv ing, completely, burned through the ceiling, and practically ruined the entire stock and fixtures of tfie main room, as well as greatly damaging the other room and contents. The fire also burned through the wall Into the Haldemnn laboratory, thus causing the second fire. The damage In the Haldeman place, while not so serious as In Hartley's, Is bad enough. The laboratory la ruined, together with a typewriter and other equipment. The damage from wat er, smoke and heat Is also manifest In all the rooms. The cause of the fire Is not known to the fire department. Mr. Bartley claims to have had about $2,600 In stock and fixtures, and that he had insurance to the amount of $1,100. The damage to the two buildings and the doctor's office, all of which falls on the doc tor, will swell the loss a thousand or more. This is the sixth fire that Mr. Bart ley has had within the past two years. Four of these were in the former Bartley residence and two In the present place of business. While we are not accusing Mr. Bartley of any complicity in these fires, the circumstances are all a lit tle peculiar It Is worthy of note that the four fires In his house came in pairs, the two fires In each duet being in each case close together. In none of his fires are there any expla nation of the cause, except the first two, which both started by brlnglne a lighted lamp into the room where gasoline had escaped. The build ing was owned by John Moore of An selmo. The ground floor was occu pied by Robinson Brothers' hard ware store. The opera house and lodge rooms were on the second floor. The total insurance on the build ing and the stock was not more than $5,000. The opera house was an old landmark In the city, having been erected In 1887. The origin of the fire Is not known.
