    THE "BLUFF" THAT WORKS
THE PIE WITH THE VARNISHED TOP
I have been called the "bluff", the
"amateur", the "fourth class Dago phpto
grapher", etc.
But do you notice that my opponents are doing more
dvertising NOW than they ever did before? They are
en advertising FREE PICTURES to turn the volume of
business from me that has INCREASED steadily since I
opened my studio.
"The Bluff" that works IS A GOOD
ONE. "The Amateur" that bends the
importance of a self-styled sage IS A
GOOD ONE. "The fourth class Dago
Dhotopraoher" that makes a self-styled
first class professional advertise free pic
tures in order to get business IS A GOOD
ONE.
Musings by W. II. Lunn, of Orkin Brothers Piano Department, on
Traveling in Western Nebraska
Composed by W. H. Lunn
The drummer sat in the hotel chair and Ml in a muting strain;
And u (ar u I could get it, thi was the gist of his retrain:
I have one great connotation, at I travel o'er the line,
That keeps me etUl a plugging, and why I can't resign.
For wherever I drop my traveling grips, where'er I sign to atop,
I'm sure to meet my old standby, The pie with the varnished top.
!
It doesn't make difference as I travel from ooaM to coast,
Whether they have pigs feet and onion, or a blooming hard boiled 1
roart; j
Whether they have cold storage chicken, or egps that Noah did store,
For I reach around for my pill box ss I walk thru the tUnkvg door
Where the clerk did whisper softly, in a voice quite low and shy,
"We have something special for you today, a bwiutlful band rubbed plo." '
As I fly along the country on 43 or 4, j
A senss of peace steals o'er me, atxl I calmly sleep and snore;
For I feel that Just behind me, In the Pullman dining car, j
That the lough Is up and doing in a great big stoneware J;ir,
And 1 know that what e'er may happen, whether we go right thru or j
stop, i
There la one who will never leave me, The pie with the varnished top.
If more proof is desired, I will be glad to show vou thatl J" su 08 world'B turning i cannot w ,y fate,
, 1 , , ' For It s all the name on the express train, or the heavy
do first class work at honest prices.

Until In line with a glorified shine, they're stacked some three feet
deep.
So why should I fret and worry, 1f we're In for a long time stop,
For I know Just close, a blxk at the most, there's The pie with the
. varnished top.
And you may Lake it from mo that it's awful hard to' tst.
The Wend 1 have Jut mentioned, when you want something to eat;
When you've got fifteen minutes, and the Con. yells all aboard,
To know that Somewhere in you a piece of pie is stored.
You may talk of all your banquets, and the extract from the hop,
Dut the big thing in creation Is The pie with the varnished top.
When this traveling life im done with, and life at Inst is o'er,
I look to meet my friend again, upon the other chore;
Internal bliss would not be mine unions I had a taste
Of that marvelous concoction of fruit and flour and paste;
And 1 know that every traveling man would never think to stop
Unless he had at least one whack at The pie with the varnished top.
