W. Norton, giving him in payment therefor a Check for $7jB0. The check was drawn on a Hemingford bank and signed "Chase Deon". Mr. Norton was suspicious and Cook the check to a local bank. They phoned to Hemingford and learned that the check waa not good. The loan who hud an account at the bank there signs his name "ChH. Dean". Galbrlath was taken to the police station and thoroughly questioned, lie told a long atory In excuse for having the check. He was then tak en to the bank and questioned thor oughly, where he told another story. Upon being told that the Heming ford banker, Mr. Dean and the man for whom he said he h:td worked in the country would come down here, he broke down and confessed that he had written the check himself. The officials believed that this was a cae where the young man would be imch better If permitted to take a light sentence, rather than send him to the penitentiary for a long term, and he was permitted to plead guilty to petty larceny and was sentenced to fifteen days in the county Jail. W. C. T. U. LADIES PLAN FOR ANOTHER RECITAL The Alliance W. C. T. U. met with Mrs. A. P. Bundy, Thursday af ternoon, Oct. 30. There waa a good attendance of members present and two visitors. A communication was read from Mrs. Bess Gear hart Mor rison, the reader and entertainer, stating that she could come to Alli ance lu the near future and give an other of her popular recitals. Plans were started to arrange for ber ev ening's entertainment. Some time was spent sewing to gether the quilt blocks which the member of the Union have been making. Mrs. J. O. Beck had charge of the program. She read an- Interesting letter from the mattron of the Kear- Emmm are Promptly Shipped ney W. C. T. U. Hospital, and Mrs. Vance told of her recent visit there while In Kearney. Several temper ance songs were sung, and Mrs. Heck gave an interesting account of her visit to the Iowa home for Meth odist superannuated ministers. Mildred Campbell gave a piano so lo, "Bells of Evening". Mrs. J. W. Heed closed the program by reading a touching and sympathetic story entitled "Uncle Sammy's Pledge". ONLY SOME BOXES A number of city firemen were called from warm bods shortly after midnight Friday by the call of the fire whistle. On arriving at the city hall, where the fire apparatus Is sta tioned, they found that a number of boys oiv a Hallowe'en prank had tak en some large dry goods boxes to the middle of ihe street in front of the hall, and set them on fire. A line of hose waa run out and the fir was quickly extinguished. The firemen reeled up the hose, re turned the cart to the hall and went back to their homes, thankful that Hallowe'en comes only once each year.
