ter from W. A. Bennett who has
been visiting Seattle, Portland and
other western points. "Bill" says
he has been having a fine itinie and
that it is a fine country out there
but he Is coming 'back to Alliance.
DRY YEARS IN ILLINOIS
There have been three extremely
dry years in central Illinois in the
last firty-nlne years, 1854, 1887 and
this year. Now that this year's
drouth there has been broken, old
timers are not agreed as to which
was the driest, some saying one
year and some another. In 1887

CANNING VEGETABLES
Mrs. E. J. Reeve gives The Her
ald a receipe for canning vegetables
which she tried la year on sweet
corn and found that It worked fine.
To eeven quarts of vegetables add
one ounce of tartaric acid, after
the ve-getables have been cooked
and just before putting Into the jars.
When opened to use, put a xood
half tea-i-poonful of soda into each
quart of vegetables. This will kill
the add so that It will not tad?.
RETURNS FROM AUTO TRIP
George W. Duncan returned from
his trip to Salt Lake City with the
Cogswell family, Tuesday noon, lie
came as far as Laramie, Wyo., via
the airtomobliie route, coming on to
this city from Laramie on the train.
Mr. Duncan reports a very enjoya
ble trip, and the three weeks of
autoing gave him a heavy coat of
tan. He thinks the Mormons have
some fine country from the sights
he viewed on the trip.
