WALSH WIUi the permission of the editor of The Herald, I desire a Tew words of space a to some of the "jum bled" statements apearlng In your columns of the Issue which were signed by Rev. A. L. Godfrey. Rev. Godfrey asks at the conclu sion of his article as to what are the "Rood people" of Alliance going to say. I Judge from his ques tion that he excludes ministers, lawyers, jurors and other non producers. This lets the bnrs down to me a citizen and tradesman It is strange to me that ministers -men of the cloth -who want good laws and well enforced are the first to scream wlin decisions and opin ions do not suit them, and tjien rise up and in one breath "jumble" lib erty, law, freedom and anarchy. What do you know about anarchy. Raft, Godfrey? Have you ever read any books on anarchy? Do you just use that, word because you believe the people generally consider It some thing to be abhored? Or do you take an obsolete dictionary definition? Rev. .Myron Heed lost his position in Denver a few years ago for telling the people that Christ was" an an archist. When the man who follow ed him verified the statement and said Myron Reed was quite correct, the congregation changed their views to the extent that they wanted Rev, Reed to return at any cost. When Christ told the poor people to go In to the corn fields and take thel same to eat, was He living up to the "law" of that day and age, or was He preaching anarchy? First let us see what Is law. Iaw Is the code of rules, written or un written, for the guidance to those who are to be ruled therefore no freedom for someone! no anarchy. Of course the fellow who favors this certain law sees freedom In it by supporting his tyranical rule over someone else. For example, you would have a law that prevents me from playing ball on Sunday away out of the city limits; you would op pose a law that would prevent the loud clang of your church bell that awakes me too early Sunday morn ing. You would call tills freedom to have done what you desire and compel me to do it also. This 1 s what I call tyranny. If we have lib erty then economic conditions must first be changed. There is but little liberty today in the true sense o f the word, when sixty-five per cent of us work for wages for a master and twelve men control the finances of the United States. The law against ball playing on Sunday is only a law In letter. It was slipped onto the statutes of the state by the legislators who were then playing to the galleries, that they might be reelected. Of course this law pleased your fancy; but how about the fellow who has work ed hard all week? I suppose he Is to be content with his condition and go to church Sunday and listen to a preacher tell how fine he and Rocke feller, et. al.. will get along oh, yes. in the next world ah, ha. The next world not a word about this one. Of course he must not ay much a bout the misery in this world caused BAKING POWDER That Makes tht. Baking MM Failure, are olan-wt impossible with Calumet. Why are you o anxious to e n force this one law now to Take a way the liberty of b:ilt playing en Joyed by some of us? The violation of a law Is the arising, amendment to the law It Is proof that the law U not desired The verdict of the Jury wag proof of this. No one dis putes that the law exists on the books 'but church tyranny has boon progressing too rapidly In the last t"tv years In this line, and now we see the natural extreme arising -violation of the letter of the law. (Jive me liberty to go to ball games and picture shows on Sunday or to stay away as 1 please Olve you liberty to go to church on Sunday or to stay away as you choose: provld oil all such places are moral and ed ucational, and enjoyable Therefore. "Law Is a nation's defense" abso lutely wrong. "Its happiness" for those who rule only. In conclusion let me say thai I Quite) agree with the Reverend i n one sentence, viz: "that some day there is a separation coming" Yes, that separation conies every day, and the day Is not far distant when the crooked lawers, sky pilots and politi cians are not going to be sent t o make silly laws to suit the fancy of a minority clique in society, so these parasites mny be returned to the Ir islatlve assemblies. Oh, no! They are Koing to be put to useful work, anil then no dispute will arise over a Utile wholesome sport of ball playing, no matter what day. As It Is the preacher is so anxious to en force a law for the "benefit" of the "poor working man" that his soul ma) be saved for the next world. What) we all work week days there will be a change of sentiment as to what we will do Sundays. Enforce ment of a Master's tyrannical law will then vanish. J. H. WA 1841. LEGAL NOTICE VY. I.
