THEY NEVER FAIL Ora ft Phillips lias been agitating the matter of experimenting on an arte. inn well project In Box Butt? county. He has been making this subject a study, and after having in vestigated the artesian wells of South Dakota and other places, he is of the opinion that artesian water can be reached in this part of No braeka In quantities sufficient for irrigation purposes. Such a thing would certainly be a bonanza for Bov Unttf GOnnty. The proposition which is now being talked of is for the couniy commissioners to levy a taking this matter up with n number mental purposes, say on the? poor farm, six miles northwest of AlUattC . or call a special ?!ection to vote bonds for that purpos , The cost of the Oral Well, IneUtde inr; bringing of the machinery to this place, etc., would ba a go d deal heavier than thai of pultinr down additional wells for ar:e3ian water. It is thought that the tii I well would cost probably in tha neighberhocd e.t $10,000, but If It nmvfd In !:- :i mier'fvs nml r.h ,i- ' wells were put down they might ttol cost more than $4,000 each. Th? amount of land thai could be Irrigat ed from one artesian well would de pend upon the etSe of the well nnd the force cf the flow. A six inch bore wi'h a. strong flow would fur nish water sufficient to Irrigate Bav eral etions of land, iron ding a reservelr could be hod :o m to hold the water when trrlj,aU:K vas no; bainic done. Mr. Phillips u-.is been j taking this matter up " i'ii a umber of the lending men of t he county,! arid as far nB wa have b. en able to ascertain they are all i tvoring tha project. We are aware that there is a good deal of prejudice against bonding, and rightly so, and also objections to adding anything unnecessary to the tax levy of the county, but If this can be made a success It certainly would pay the county well to make the necessary levy or bond for the ex periment. In this connection we might mention that a levy sufficient to ralbe $10,000 would be about two nnd one-half mills on the dollar of assessed valuation. This would mean that a man who has $23,000 worth of property in t ho county, assessed at $5,000, would ba required to pay $12.50 as his share of the $10,000. Of course, if tbie amount should be raised by bonding it would not all be paid in one year, although I her? would be interest added. Let us figure on that bill of Q roceries that you need.
