It is not half so important what
Speaker Cnnnon says nhout Senntor
Cummins and the insurgents as to
what the latter propose to do nhout it
The speaker ami liis friends arc in
trenched. It is easy to see the advan
tage of their position. The inertia of
politics is with them. It is the tuau
who proposes change, who hrcaks fiom
the ranks, who must have an aggress
ivc program and who must convert the
people hy argument and effect his pur
pose hy organization.
To merely reiterate that Speaker
Cannon is wrong atid the progressive
movement is right signifies nothing'
The people will mildly commend the
progressives and solidly vote with the
organization. The tendency to vote
with the organization is so strong that
progressive movements need much
more to be successful than to he right.
They must ho shrewdly planned and
aggressively promoted.
Of what avail will he the speeches of
a half dozen senators, more or less, if
at the first test of local sentiment their
own states arc found renominating and
re-electing their opponents? If in Ne
braska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indi
ana and Iowa it is found that the rank
and file of the party are reasonably
satisfied with conditions as they are
the progressive movement will not out
last the first year of the administration.
Senator Aldricb came to the middle
west not half so much to talk about
banking as he did to satisfy himself
just bow much importance to attach to
the uprising. The impression prevails
that he returned much restored in mind
and body, and much less likely to bo
disturbed by anything that may be
said in the senate this winter- The
middle west, which must give vitality
to the protest against Cannonism and
Aldrichism, his discerning eye discov
eted to bo without organization or lead
ership of such a character as to make
headway against the organized power
of the party.
Speaker Cannon would not continue
his debate with Senator Cummins if he
did not appreciate the advantage of his
position.
