Valentine Wins
Two Games
Sunday was a day of defeat for the
Alliance ball team. Two game3 played
on the home grounds with Valentine
gave them defeat in both instances.
The first nine innings closed with a
score of 8 to 3. At the beginning of
the game it appeared as it the local
players would have things their own
way, the Score standing a to o, but
when the fifth was reached, Valentine
succeeded in running iu seven scores
and turned the tide completely in their
favor. Hull did good work in the box
while Freer was at bis best behind the
bat. But in the fifth inning the visi
tors found the ball and when three men
were on bases the batter succeeded in
driving a red hot one into the outer
field which made it possible for the
runners to score. This caused havic
to our boys and the inning closed with
seven scores for the visitors. Aside
from this discouraging feature, the
game was well played on both sides.
Caylor, Valentine's pitcher, is certainly
a ball player iu every sense of the
word. He has good speed and staying
qualities that were too much. for the
Alliance team.
After the first contest, aseven-inning
game followed with the same team.
Dr. Copsey took Hull's place in the
pitcher's box while Caylor continued
for the visitors. Fate was still against
the local team aud the game closed
with a game of 7 to 3. Following is
the score:
Valentine 1 o 2 o o 3 1 7
Alliance 2 o o o o 1 o 3
Umpires Thompson, Barnes and Cop
sey. Among the good players of the Val
entine team was Garland Wehn, who
played third base. Mr. Wehn came
up from Bridgeport Sunday morning
and after pitching for the Elks iu the
morning, did some good field work and
battery for the Valentine team in the
games with Alliance.
