')n Tuosdny W. J. Bryan gave out
the following statement:
I shall vote for Parker and Davis,
the nominees of the democratic national
conjrenlion, ntul shall do so for the fol
lowing reasons:
''First - Because the deuioerntic
ttcknt stnuth for opposition to imperial
isinj&wliilo the republican ticket stands
for 11 impurialistio policy. On this
lUftSfani which was the parnmotint' is
supjii 1900, and which must rcmnin an
impjjii taut issue so long as an nttempt
is( nindc to, hold colouios under the
American flng on this issue the con
vention was unanimous, the platform
cmhntlc, and I have no doubt that the
candidates will carry out the platform.
"Second--Mr. Roosevelt is injecting
the race, ylfue juto American politics
and tlus,-f St? becomes natiunal, will
make it impossible to consider economic
questions' that demand solution. The
election of the democratic ticket will
put a quietus upon this nttempt and
permit tho race question to work itscU
out without the bitterness which Mr.
Koogcvelt's conduct has engendered.
"ThirdMr. Roosevelt stands for
the spirit ol war. His friend piesent
him an a man of blood and iron. He
believes in strenuousness and inculcat
ing a love for warlike things. Tho
democratic ticket stands for peace, for
reason and for arbitration, rather than
ior force,- conquest am! bluster.
"Fourth The democratic platform
dcclaros in favor of the reduction of
the stauding army, and as this plank
was unanimously adopted there is
reason to believe that a democratic sue
cees on this subject would bring some
advantage to the people."
"Some may think" says tho World
Herald, "that Mr. Davis would bo a
little too old to preside over the senate,
but it must be that Senator Pcltus,
aged 83, and Senator Morgan, So,
would like it, and that no serious objec
tion could be made by Senator Hoar,1
78; beuator ITatt, 71; Senator Cullom,
75; Senator Depcw, 70; Senator Haw
ley, 78; Senator Frye, 73; Sonator Al
lison, 74, or Senator Proctor, 72."
The Chicago Chronicle has flopped
into the republican band wagon giving
as its reason that Bryan controlled
the St. Louis convention. Good rid
dance of bad rubbish! The Chronicle
has at last gouo where it belonged.
For teu years it lias been a traitor to
the democratic party and democrats
are"! pleased to see it throw off the
