A. there. The Union Sunday School picnic held at Elmwood Park last Thursday afternoon was very largely attended and enjoyed by all. The day was all that could be desired. E. church has pur chased a new edifice at Twenty-sec ond and Miami streets, at a cost of $12,000, upon which a payment of $5,000 has been made. The corner stone will he laid Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Bishop Matthew W. Clair, Dr. W. A. V. Hughes, Rev. B. R. Booker, the Rev. T. B. Orville, pastor, and others will participate in the services and ceremonies. The Masonic fraternity and other organi zations and members of the congre gation will assemble at Grove, Twen ty-second and Seward streets, at 1 o’clock, and headed by Waddles’ band, will march to the new site. Miss Madeline Shipman spent last Thursday in Omaha, the guest of Mrs. Isaac Bailey. LEAVES FOR ELK CONVENTION Attorney Amos P. Scruggs, exalt ed ruler, Iroquois Lodge No. 93, I. B. P. O. E. W., leaves Saturday night for Chicago, enroute to the Elks’ con vention in New York. He will leave on the Elks’ special train from Chi cago, August 20, and will be gone for about ten days. He goes as the representative of the local lodge of Elks. j NEWS OF SALEM BAPTIST CHURCH Rev. E. H. Hilson, Pastor. Sunday was a great day for Salem. Sunday School met at the usual hour, with Assistant Superintendent Gard ner in charge. The school was ad dressed by Mrs. Hilson. At 11 o’clock the pastor preached, having as his topic “God Pays the Highest for Labor.” His evening tHeme was “The Wonderful Christ.” The B. Y. P. U. meeting was held at B:.10, interesting features of which were two duetts by the pastor and his wife. The Lord's Supper was ad ministered at the evening service. On August 4 the congregation held a reception in honor of the Rev. and Mrs. E. H. Hilson. An in teresting program of addresses and music were features of this delight ful affair. Addresses were delivered by G. W. Wilson, Louis Stromile, the Rev. T. W. Kidd, pastor of Bethel A. M. E. church. Attorney W. B. Bry ant, Mrs. J. I). Lewis, the Rev. W. F. Botts, pastor of Zion Baptist church, Mrs. A. I). Turner, and Rev. J. H. Jackson, pastor of Bethel Baptist church. Mrs. Hilson was presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. VACATION SCHOOL CLOSES The Vacation School of the Color ed Cultural Center on the South Side closed with appropriate exercises and an enjoyable program in Swift’s cafe teria, Saturday night, July 30. Ex hibits of handicraft, needlework and cookery reflected credit upon both pupils and faculty. The exhibits in all departments were excellent. Brief talks were made by the teachers of each department. Miss Helen Gauss, head of the Social Settlement, on be half of the members of the Center, presented Mrs. Busch, moving spirit in the Center, with a gift of apprecia tion. Mrs. M. L. P.)—The lo cal lodges of the Knights of Pythias of North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia, lare rapidly consummating plans for the entertainment of 100,000 mem bers of the order, who are supposed to gather here August 13-20, to at tend the 24th biennial session of the j supreme lodge. The order boasts of some 400,000 members and resources amounting to $10,000,000.00 including real es tate, fraternal endowment reserve and high grade bonds. Of particular interest in this respect is the Nation al Pythian Temple, which is being erected at a cost of $1,000,000.00 here at 37th Place and State Street.
