Washington.—The bureau of public roads of the United States Department of Agriculture will shortly undertake a survey of -the mileage, cost, character of construction und general condition of the nation’s highways. The survey, which is the most extensive ever un dertaken und the first in seven years, is to be made with the aid ,of state und local officials and individuals the couu try over, und is comparable only to the greut tusk of tuking the national census. Nobody, in all probability, could guess today within millions of dollars what tile roadways totul, in doliurs and cents, on the ledger of the national ussets. Nobody knows how many miles there are where wheels may roll. The strength and the weakness of the na tion’s transportation arteries likewise are unknow n in detuil. When the survey is completed, all these and other facts will be known and will lie available for guidance to road builders. In addition there will be abundant data to show up compari sons of costs. The well-built roads of, say, Pennsylvania can be laid, dollar for dollar and mile for mile, alongside the well-lmilt roads of California and other states. First cost and mainte nance of macadam, usphult, concrete— every kind of road built—from one sec tion cun lie matched against such cost from every other section, If desired. The way to make lUc dollar most effec five in mad work thus will be pointed out. ltural highways as well us urban are to be included, the latter embracing all roods, streets ami alleys in incorporat ed communities of 2,5O'" inhabitants or more. How the funds are provided for constructing and maintaining roads also will lie made known. The amount Invested in road machinery—an Item concerning which even approximate In formation Is lacking today—will he sought. ‘After tlie Information Is ob tained it will lie kept up to dale. In undertaking the survey the hu reau requests the assistance of ever' unit of government doing road work In tlie nation; of road officials the coun try over, and of associations, organism tions and Individuals, down to the man with a tllvver. having Information or data as to local highway activities. A future legislation may lie based on percentage of road mileage, it is point ed out that It is essential for each unit to have its total, as well as its im proved road miletfge. carefully and cor rectly recorded in the survey. Wedding Days In Holland. In orderly Holland, where every thing happens by rule, the different classes of society rhoose different days of the week on which to be married. For some unknown reason Monday Is society’s day and marriage fees for thoi day amount to a sum approxi mate to $24. On Saturdays the barge Is $2, or nothing at all If the ■ouple do not wish a separate cere mnny. and are willing to Join a group if 20 couples. At these groun mar riages. the clerk reads the service mire ill the couples making the respiui-e n chorus.
