WORLD’S U. S. CONVENTION STANDS FOR RACIAL EQUALITY Broad-Minded and Influential Representatives From Thirty Coun tries Unanimously Declare for World Brotherhood and the Abolition of Race Prejudice in Great International Assem blage at Tokyo. RESOLUTIONS ADOPTED MANIFEST THE RIGHT SPIRIT BY THE REV. CHARLES E. STEWART Pastor Ebenezer A. M. E. Church, Baltimore, Md.—Delegate to World's S. S. Convention from Baltimore Annual A. M. E. Conference. Tokyo, Japan—The eighth and greatest session of the World’s Sun day School Convention, now about to close, is being held in Tokio, Japan. It was brought to the Orient to stimu late Christian activities in the Orient, but every dark race has received won derful benefits from its session, not only by being represented, but the world’s great speakers and religious leaders have not hesitated to openly and forcefully speak against race prejudice and hatred at every oppor tunity. Two of the world’s greatest pulpit eers, one from America and one from England, brought tremendous ap plause from the vast audience which packed the Imperial theatre in Tokyo, when the American said: “This is no place for the recognition or display of race bickerings or prejudices,” and the very next evening the English clergyman stated: “The world is bleeding from the wounds of war and these briars and thorn trees of hypoc ricy and race hatred must be rooted up so the myrtle and fir tree of broth erly love and Christian zeal may unit • edly bring in the Great Physician that these wounds may be healed.” I have never before seen a gather ing made up of the Christian leaders of all the world who unflinchingly champion the causes of right, which many others deftly sidetrack, and ! have their words received with such (approval, as at this convention. Strikes New Keynotes. If this convention is striking new keynotes and chords for the future as it has done in the past, there is a new day dawning for the Negro. One man here attending the convention is per sonally supporting thirteen mission aries in Africa, and I might say he is a btisiness man from one of the south ern states. A man from Alabama very cordially accepted an introduction to me and with much interest inquired concerning the work of the A. M. E churcb. We had previously exchanged other courtesies, not knowing the identity of each other. The convention, representing thirty or more nations, went on record as standing for racial eqality, voting unanimously for the adoption of reso lutions presented by Dr. Cole Poole of London, England, embodying the prin ciples of world brotherhood on a plat form of international policy and faith. The resolutions are as follows: “We, the delegates of the World's Eighth Sunday School Convention, in conference assembled in Tokyo, Jap an, representing thirty countries and 30,000.000 officers, teachers and schol ars, affirm the following proposition embodying the principles of world | brotherhood, with special reference to (international relationships: JTTrf-HW'H-sre.HfgK.'KKSt-t; rh raaCWH. it mcHSOCti i Beautiful Columbia Hall I c 2420 I>ake Street Webster 765 I For Rent for Balls, Parties, Recitals and General Assemblies. We affirm an unshaken belief in the solidarity of the human race, and further affirm our conviction that any conception of racial or national in tegrlty that ignores this basic fact Imperils the security of the world. ”2. We record our appreciation of every movement that makes for a deepening sense of mutual indebted ness and obligation among the na tions, and likewise deplore every ac tion that makes for misunderstanding, discord and dissension. “3. We attest our confidence in tin practicability of a world brotherhood and hold that fealty to the principle ot 1 the common good is more cohesive : than mere similarity in customs, hab ) its and manners. Discrimination Engenders Bitterness. "4. We maintain that any national | or International policy that seems to | discriminate in the treatment of na ; tions and races engenders bitterness ; and is subversive to the best interests jof mankind and inimical to the peai i j of the world. “.5 We believe that all national or international problems are solvable and all international difficulties ad Justable if dealt with in a spirit of j dignified tolerance, noble conciliation and Christian forbearance, and that Christian altruism must take the place of enlightened self-interest in the settlement of all international j contentions. ■‘6. We record our conviction that brotherhood must be vitalized so as to have a direct relation to the Kingdom of God. A passion for righteousness is the moral minimum with which in ternational relations can be safe guarded. World brotherhood requires j an international consciousness. This j can only be acquired through the un limied expansion of our own person ality. The spacious world mind can come only through fellowship witli Him who is at once Son of God and son of man. ' j ”7. We call the nations to heed the warning given by the present world chaos and to deliberately refrain from taking any provocative national ac tion that would wound national honor discount national prestige, or be of such a character as to create suspi- j cions, resentment or revenge. ‘‘8. Finally, we assert our unalter able conviction that nothing in this world Is settled until it Is settled ! right. We hold that spiritual sam tions must have a place In life and i that moral mandates must increas ingly exercise their power in controll ing the conduct of mankind. With un faltering trust and high resolve, we pledge our allegiance to these prin ; eiples and dedicate our lives to fchrdr speedy realization throughout ail the1 earth.” DELAWARE’S POPULATION SHOWS SLIGHT DECREASE WILMINGTON, Del., Nov. 25. — Delaware’s Negro population has fal-1 len off during the past decade accord ing to figures just returned by th< national census bureau. Africa, Nov. 25.—Ameri can Negroes would be welcomed as immigrants in Liberia, the black re public of Africa, says the Right Rev. \V. H. Over, American Episcopal bishop of Liberia. The Liberian gov ernment offers liberal land and com mercial grants to all blacks, he says, Ifut the Liberians are refusing conces sions or citizenship to any whites, be cause they would rather see their country develop more slowly than to lose any the liberties which have made Liberia the pride of the black race.
