f Among the Churches \ ALLEN CHAPEL A. M. E. CHl'RCH Rev. J. A. Broadnax, Pastor. Services were good and well attend ed Sunday. Rev. Dr. Ross preached at the evening service in his very ef ficient way. One member, Mr. Polk Jon«!s, was added to our Zion. Rev. Allen was present at the morning service, and in the evening Rev. Har ris and Rev. Parker W'ere at their post of duty. The following were elected as trus ^ tees for the coming year: L. Pegrem, G. Haywood, A. Floid, W. C. Mallard, V. Trice, W. Alston, P. Jefferson, A. Ward and C. Riddles. George Redd, S. Jackson, C. J. Good are the new stewards. S. C. Chainey, G. W. Tucker ->d 0. J. Blue are the newly elector.^ ,ss leaders. Quarterly meeting wil' be held Sun day, November 23. The presiding eld er, Dr. A. C. Terrel, will be present. V, e want $100 for Allen Chapel the second Sunday in November. Some have already pledged as much as $5. Mrs. Sarah Severe, Sada Stapleton, E. Clark and Mrs. O. J. Blue are the leaders chosen by the pastor. MT. MORIAH BAPTIST CHURCH. Rev. M. H. Wilkinson, Pastor. The pastor delivered two interest ing sermons Sunday to an appre ciative audience. At the morning services the rally of twelve made their report. They raised $1,201. The Art Club met with Mi's. J. A. Newby last Tuesday. There were four visitors and two members added to the club. The club gave $100 in the rally. The Silver Leaf Club met with Mrs. L. Stovall, Twenty-sixth and Seward streets, Monday evening. After a short business session a dainty lunch was served. This club contributed $25.00 to the rally. Miss Frances Bvnum and Mr. Wil liam Hicks were married at the par sonage last Thursday, Rev. Wilkinson performing the ceremony. There was a good at tendance, and a delicious lunch was served. ST. JOHN’S A. M. E. CHURCH Rev. W. C. William*, Pastor — Two very large audiences filled the i auditorium on Sunday. The pastor preached with an unusual amount of . spiritual force. There were ten per ' sons added to the church. The col i lection for the week was $229.51. The money for charity was $43.30. The sick of the church are Mes rlames Howard Moss, Unita apart ments; Francis Smith, 1334 Ogden street; Messrs. Earl Johnson,, St. Jo seph’s hospital, and Mr. Charles Gar rett, 2411 Lake street. A missionary society was organized Friday afternoon at the church. Quite a numer of valuable women became members. The W. W. club held a delightful meeting Friday evening at the resi dence of Mrs. Carr, 2411 Lake street. BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH. Rev. Thomas A. Taggart, Pastor. The Mission Circle, under the lead ership of Mrs. Whidley, Mrs. Burton and others, rendered a program dur ing the past week which was a great success; $116 was realized. One pleas ing feature of the program was a mock convention. Rev. Booker preached at the morn ing seivices at Bethel last Sunday. There was one convert. At the even ing sei vices Rev. Taggart preached a very interesting and spiritual se - mon. Mr. Vargne, Mrs. Estella Andrews and Mr. Johnson, who have been ill, are improving. Lady Blayde is able to be out again after her illness. Her many friends were glad to see her out to church Sunday. There will be baptizing at the church next Sunday. All are invited. The pastor will preach. The Dorcas Industrial club will give an entertainment at the home of Mrs. G. Taggart, 2120 North Twenty seventh street. The pastor especially wants to see all the members at his home on this occasion. The United Burial Association of the Bethel Baptist church will make an announcement later about their meeting. SIOUX CITY. Rrv. I’. M. Lewis preached Sunday morning to a well-filled house. His text was: “Be Not Afraid It Is I.” The morning choir which has been reorganized under the direction of Mrs. Mahalia Wright,made their first appearance Sunday and rendered ex cellent music. The official board at their meeting the 21st fixed the pastor’s salary and decided to continue the envelope sys tem of raising funds. This system seems to meet the approval of all. The Stewardess Board, under the leadership of Mrs. Mary Knight, will give an entertainment Thursday, No vember 5, to raise the presiding elders ] assessment. Pcv. T. B. Stovall, P. E. of the Des Moines district, will hold his first quarterly meeting Sunday, Novembei 9th. Mrs. M. J. Clay and her mother, Mrs. D. C. Clay, are preparing to move to Omaha. They will be greatly missfd in the church circle. Mr. Charles Murray’s father, who has been visiting him for the past week, has returned to his home in Omaha. Rev. Lewis and Mr. Tom Constan tine spent one day last weeks as the guests of Mrs. Hicks, 1301 Hill street. Rev. Lewis has sent an A. D. S. call for a basso in the evening choir. The pastor being indisposed Sun day evening, Mr. Joseph Norris gave a most excellent address. The attend ance was good at both services, with a collection of $25.00. Dr. J. Wilbur Norris reports $36.00 raised for the Roosevelt fund. This amount has been forwarded to S. Joe Brown at Des Moines, state chairman. HASTINGS, NEB. Mrs. Willie Swain entertained a few friends at a birthday party Octobei 12. The house was beautifully deco rated with different colors. The even ing was spent in playing whist, aftei which a delicious four course luncheon was sowed. Immediately after lunch Miss Clara Spencer, daughter of th’e hostess, entered the room bearing a cake with thirty-five candles. Mr. J. S. Craig was toastmaster. Mrs. Swain received many beautiful and valuable presents. After a pleasant time the guests departed wishing Mrs. Swain many more happy birthdays. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Trice of Alda, Neb.; Mr. and Mrs. James Wilson of Grand Island, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Briscoe, Mr. and Mrs. Wyth Walker, Mrs. N. Palestine is full of visitors this j week. The Baptist state convention is1 in session and they are having success | both financially and spiritually. They have already raised $26,000 which took them over the top. The Y. W. C. A. held a very suc cessful session at St. Paul M. E. church last week. Sells and Floto circus was in town last week. Many visitors enjoyed the sights. Mr. Louis Garland was the guest of his wife last week. Prof. J. L. Hamilton of Cuney and Rev. A. W. Keith were visitors to this; office last week. Rev. G. W. Carter will hold his fourth and last quarterly conference at St. Paul M. E. church next Sunday and Monday, after which he will go to Houston to attend annual conference. This is his last year as district su-1 perintendent in this district. While here he made many friends who are sorry to see him leave. We wish for' him success in his new field, COUNCIL BLUFFS. Mrs. Lizzie Tanhill of Chicago and Mrs. Martha Payne of St. Paul, were the guests last week of their sister, Mrs. Ellen Rodriguez. Mrs. Tanhill also visited at the homes of Mrs. H. V. Besse and Mrs. Fankel. She is a former resident of Council Bluffs and a menjber of Bethel A, M. E. Mrs. Casey and Mrs. Jaco of Glas coe. Mo., are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Mildem Banks, 1706 Third street. Mr. P. P. Fanner, who was called to Triplet, Mo., on business, sent for Mrs. Fanner and she left last Satur day evening and returned Monday. Miss Addie Davis who, with her mother, was called to Billings, Mont., on account of the illness of her sister, returned home last Friday. Hei j mother will stay for an indefinite! time. Mrs. Althouse, whose son is on the i railroad out of this city, accompanied ; by her family, anived in Council | Bluffs last yveek. She will make this ] her future home. Mrs. J. Payne and Mrs. J. W. Hall, were the guests of Miss Hazel | Punches in Glenwood, la., last week. The Church Aid Society met at the home of Mrs. A. Mallott last Friday afternoon. Mrs. Lizzie Payne, the president, is doing splendid work with the Aid and is making it a great suc cess. The next meeting will be with Mrs. J. W. Hall October 31.
