Our Women and Children Conducted by Lucille Skaggs Edwards. IS IT WORTH WHILE? Joaquin Miller Is it worth while that we jostle a brother Bearing his load on the rough road of life? Is it worth while that we jeer at each other In the blackness of heart?—that we war to the knife? God pity us all in our pitiful strife. God pity us all as we jostle each other; God pardon us all for the triumphs we feel When a fellow goes down; poor, heart broken brother, Tierced to the heart; words are keener than steel, And mightier, far, for woe and for weal. Were it not well in this brief little journey On over the isthmus, down into the tide, We give him a fish instead of a ser pent, Ere folding the hands to be and abide For ever and aye, in dust at his side Look at the roses saluting each other; Look at the herds all at peace on the plain— Man, and man only, makes war on his brother, And dotes in his heart on his peril and pain— Shamed by the brutes that go down on the plain. GOOD ADVICE. Keep good company or none. Never he idle. If your hands cannot be use I fully employed, attend to the cultiva ion of your mind. Always speak the iruth. Make few promises. Live up o your engagements. Keep your own secrets, if you have any. When you speak to a person look him in the ace. Good company and good con versation are the very sinews of vir j tue. Good character is above all ; things else. Your character cannot he essentially injured except by your I own acts. If any one speaks ill of you, let your life be so that none will relieve him. Ever live, misfortune | excepted, within your income. When ; you retire to bed, think over what i you have been doing during the day. Make no haste to be rich if you would prosper. Small and steady gains give competency with tranquillity of mind. Avoid temptation, through fear that you may not withstand it. Earn money before you spend it. Never run in debt, unless you see a way to get out again. Never borrow if you yan possibly avoid it. Do not marry until you are able to support a wife. Never speak ill of any one. - - BIT OF WISDOM FOR TODAY For let a man once show the world that he feels Afraid of its bark, and ’twill fly at his heels; Let him fearlessly face it—’twill leave him alone But ’twill fawn at his feet—if he flings it a bone! —Lytton.
